D23 Expo hasn’t even started yet and news is out! In a bit of surprise, Tokyo Disneyland has revealed the names of their upcoming Tomorrowland attractions as well as the shops that will be built around them. Work has been ongoing on the land for years, with a brand new Space Mountain being built and a retheme of the Buzz Lightyear attraction to Wreck-it Ralph. In this post, we’ll share all of the news about these new attraction names as well as what will be around them before adding our own commentary. Let’s get to the news!

Tomorrowland has continued to evolve ever since the grand opening of Tokyo Disneyland Park in 1983. After an investment of approximately 100 billion Japanese Yen, Tomorrowland will undergo a major transformation of its central area with the creation of two new attractions, in addition to new shops and restaurants.

The attraction themed to Walt Disney Animation Studios Film Wreck-It Ralph, set to open in spring of 2027, will be called Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue. The name of the new Space Mountain attraction is Space Mountain Earthrise, and the surrounding area will be called Tomorrowland Plaza.

Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue will transport guests into a vibrant game world where Ralph, Vanellope and others need everyone’s help to defeat King Candy. The attraction introduces new technology to Tokyo Disney Resort for an interactive storytelling experience that is the first of its kind for a Disney theme park.

Space Mountain Earthrise, the signature attraction of Tomorrowland, will retain the previous version’s concept as an indoor coaster but will be completely transformed. A beloved attraction since Tokyo Disneyland first opened, Space Mountain will return with various enhancements, a new story and rich and dynamic show elements to take guests on an even more thrilling and captivating journey through outer space, delivering an unprecedented experience.

Lastly, located at the heart of Tomorrowland is Tomorrowland Plaza. This area — a symbolic portrayal of mankind and nature existing in harmony — connects the Tomorrowland of the past and future. With Tomorrowland Plaza at its center, the new vision for Tomorrowland will continue to evolve. Look forward to a world of tomorrow never seen before!

Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue

Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue is an indoor attraction inspired by Wreck-It Ralph, a Disney Animation film that takes place in a video game world, and offers an interactive gaming experience that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. This will be the world’s first attraction themed to Wreck-It Ralph.

In the attraction, guests will enter the candy-themed racing game “Sugar Rush,” and team up with film characters Ralph and Vanellope to save this candy-filled world from being destroyed by Sugar Bugs — glitches created by King Candy. Guests can expect an immersive, fun experience as they dive into a colorful world of video games to restore the Sugar Bugs back to their original “kawaii” forms of gummy candies, cupcakes and other confectionery.

It has also been revealed that a new store and popcorn stand will debut with the Wreck-it Ralph attraction. Pixel Prism, the gift shop, will be located next to the attraction and will offer a variety of merchandise including items inspired by the attraction. The new popcorn stand will be facing toward Tomorrowland Plaza and there is no news yet on what flavor it will offer. I’m guessing something sweet!

Space Mountain Earthrise

Space Mountain Earthrise is an all-new indoor roller coaster-type attraction that takes guests on an unforgettable journey through outer space, featuring brand new architecture and a newly developed ride system that combines imaginative storytelling and immersive theatrical effects inspired by the wonders of space. The attraction begins with a powerful launch from Earth, hurtling guests aboard their ride vehicles deep into space.

From there, guests can enjoy a dynamic and immersive experience through the cosmos unlike ever before, with special light and sound effects inspired by various space phenomena. Additionally, in a first for roller coasters at Tokyo Disney Resort, the ride vehicles will come equipped with an onboard audio system. The attraction’s exterior incorporates curved features designed after the movements of celestial bodies and forms found in nature, such as trees and flowers — an expression of the connection between space and nature.

The “Earthrise” in Space Mountain Earthrise refers to the sight of Earth from space as it rises from beyond the Moon’s surface, just as the Sun rises from the horizon. The name captures the beauty and preciousness of Earth as an unparalleled existence within the universe and is a concept unique to Japan among Space Mountain attractions at Disney theme parks worldwide. Through an exciting and captivating cosmic voyage, guests will explore the mysteries of the vast universe, and as they do, rediscover the beauty of our planet and be instilled with hope for tomorrow.

Tomorrowland Plaza

Tomorrowland Plaza embodies the idea of mankind and nature living in harmony. The area will be decorated by structures inspired by the elements that make up nature such as fire, water, earth and wood, and by the light from celestial objects such as the Sun and Moon. For guests resting at Tomorrowland Plaza, these many monuments will serve as reminders of the interconnectedness of humanity, nature and space. When night falls, the area will transform with lights and sounds to deliver a world filled with hope, dreams and surprise. Guests can let their endless dreams for the future soar at Tomorrowland Plaza.

The area will also include Element Express, a counter-service restaurant that will offer snacks and drinks. Judging solely from concept art, this is not confirmed, Element Express will sit to the right of Space Mountain Earthrise and will be at least partially inside. That could be off from reality but it appears to be a large building that doesn’t intrude on Tomorrowland Plaza.

Commentary

This is a fun way to get the weekend started! As I said in our D23 Predictions Post, Oriental Land Company will march to the beat of their own drum. Announcing all of this likely means there’s a model, or at least more information, on the show floor at D23 Ultimate Disney Fan Event. You just read this but there was no official date given in the release, that could still be to come at the parks showcase.

Turning our attention to the actual news, some of this was either heavily rumored or already known. Space Mountain Earthrise was the presumed name of the attraction. Confirming the coaster launch, the onboard audio system and inspiration for the names is interesting and further hype for what we expect to be one of the best attractions in the world!

Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue was more of a mystery, although there’s only so much you can change when we know it’s the Buzz Lightyear interactive gaming ride system. If I had to bet, shooting lasers at King Candy will likely be similar to shooting lasers at Zurg! That said, I expect this attraction to look incredible because of the amount of money Oriental Land Company has poured into it. I expect the amount of color in the ride to be otherworldly.

As for the attraction names, they’re pretty good! I’m guessing everyone will still call Space Mountain Earthrise just Space Mountain. But maybe it will transcend time, space and Disney Parks lingo. Earthrise is a cool word that I will be trying to use as a verb every chance I get. I will fail.

Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue is a solid name as well. I expect everyone to refer to it as Sugar Rush but the cool kids are already saying that it should be referred to as Sweet Rescue. It’s kind of refreshing to see that the franchise name (Wreck-it Ralph) isn’t shoehorned into the attraction title. Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue accomplishes the goal of being pretty fun to say and fairly memorable.

One of the biggest reveals of this news is what will go along with the attractions. I can’t wait to step foot into Tomorrowland Plaza. It looks like the Tomorrowland of my dreams, the space that we’ve all hoped for. The news release from Tokyo Disney Resort might jump through a few hoops to show off how nature will play a role in the space but I’m happy to hear that they’re including some greenery. The concept art has always looked incredible and now the real life photos are starting to take shape.

I’m also excited to see that the refreshed land will include a counter-service restaurant. The area will be slammed when it first opens and more dining spots will be needed. Here’s hoping that it’s an elaborate spot that offers excellent options like we can find elsewhere in Tokyo Disneyland.

We can’t wait to experience the new Tomorrowland at Tokyo Disneyland! Everything looks incredible, from the attractions to the plaza. I’m guessing that this isn’t the last time we’ve heard about Tokyo Disneyland’s Tomorrowland this weekend, with the D23 Expo looming.
