Cinderella Castle Makeover Coming to Magic Kingdom

Today at Destination D23, Disney announced that a castle makeover was coming to Magic Kingdom. Most of the makeover will center around a new, return to classic, color palette. In this post, we’ll detail the news that was shared by Imagineering before adding our own commentary. Let’s get to the news!

New Color Palette Announced for Cinderella Castle

For more than 50 years, Cinderella Castle has welcomed guests down Main Street, U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom. During the “Beyond the Spires: An Insider Look at Disney Castles” panel at Destination D23, Imagineers looked back at the various overlays and color schemes for Cinderella Castle over the years. Imagineers also shared a rendering for the new Cinderella Castle color palette, which is inspired by the classic and original look of the castle.

The updated paint will feature grays, creams, blues, and touches of gold aiming to enhance the castle’s architecture. While the project team is still putting the finishing touches on the paint design process, we wanted to share the incredible amount of research and care that goes into this project.

A Royal Palette

Around the globe, there are six Disney “Castle parks,” where the castles serve as the heart of the parks. The landmarks draw guests in, act as the backdrop of cherished family photos, and ultimately represent the magic of Disney around the world. At Walt Disney World, the castle’s iconic look is built on a timeless color combination: deep blues paired with radiant golds. These colors were chosen to reflect the Florida sunshine in a way that makes the castle shimmer from every angle.

No matter the season or the perspective, Cinderella Castle is designed to be picture-perfect, much of which can be attributed to the paint and themed finishes. Because of that, the paint used has to undergo accelerated UV and weather testing, simulating years of sun exposure. This rigorous process ensures that the castle’s colors stay vivid for years to come.

For hard-to-reach locations, such as the roofs, a high-performance paint is used. That kind of paint is actually used for cars! The paint is durable and long-lasting, reducing the need for touch-ups.

Sheen also plays an important role. Subtle variations help the castle feel more lifelike: stones are finished with a lower sheen to appear natural, while rooftops and gold accents shine with higher gloss, giving them a decorative sparkle. Gold is used strategically around the spires, to catch the last reflections of sunlight.

Commentary

While this is another smaller scope announcement, it’s one that I’m happy to see. I love a fresh paint job on the castle, especially one that includes a classic blue and gold scheme. That color pairing with the typical gorgeous Floridian sunset is especially picturesque.

The current ‘Royal Makeover’ on Cinderella Castle is fairly divisive, as many people didn’t like the pink on the castle. I’m somewhere in between – I didn’t like it much at first but as the pink softened in the sun I liked the color more and more. Still, I think the return to the gray castle will be a positive change and will be loved.

I’m also excited to see what other flourishes the castle will have going forward. The one drawback, at least for me, of the icon going back to gray is that it won’t be as unique. There are other castles that are already gray. But that’s a minor worry compared to my excitement for the fresh, classic look.

I’m also curious about when the project will start. Starting immediately would be great but that puts the project up against the holiday season, getting the whole makeover done in the 2 months would be a tough job. I think early 2026 is more likely, thanks to all of the Christmas plans already set for November and December.

January and February are reasonably slow at Magic Kingdom, although not to the level of late August and September. Aiming to get the castle makeover done after the holiday season before the summer of 2026 is the most logical timeframe. No matter the timeframe, I’m guessing that we’ll find out soon.

Overall, this is another win for Magic Kingdom that was announced at Destination D23. Between Carousel of Progress, a Tron overlay and now this announcement, Walt Disney World’s castle park should see a nice boost in the next year.
