Disney’s Prettiest Restaurant – Ristorante di Canaletto Review

Ristorante di Canaletto is a table-service restaurant in Tokyo DisneySea. Located in Mediterranean Harbor, the restaurant sits along the Venice themed canal, watching gondolas pass by. As you might expect, Italian cuisine is offered here. In this post, we’ll review Ristorante di Canaletto’s cuisine, atmosphere and value.

The championship belt for Disney’s prettiest restaurant is tightly contested and that’s without going to several resorts, including Paris. Ultra atmospheric places like Blue Bayou at Disneyland or Tokyo Disneyland enter the ring. Walt Disney World’s slew of rooftop restaurants like California Grill, Toledo and Topolino’s Terrace are all worthy contenders with a modern design. Prettiest is subjective, unable to fight in a cage match, but if there’s one spot that could bring home the prize it’s Ristorante di Canaletto.

I’m sticking with the prettiest title because there are restaurants with better themes or that possess more grandeur. Not that Ristorante di Canaletto suffers in those departments. Mediterranean Harbor at Tokyo DisneySea is glorious, with beautiful colors and sweeping views. And no spot in that land does it better than the Venice Canal. Sitting alongside that water is the restaurant, largely unassuming from the outside. A simple sign marks the restaurant. It’s easy to miss considering one of the best theme park views ever is right behind!

I don’t think any inside of a restaurant could touch the view pictured above but Ristorante di Canaletto tries it’s darndest. The center of the restaurant features an arched ceiling with an ornate design and a mural of Canaletto himself on the side. There are elegant chandeliers suspended a long ways down from that ceiling. It’s really a showstopping setting that somehow lives up to the Venice themed canal outside.

The indoor seating sections along the walls are beautiful, although more understated. The wood panels overhead give off a wine cellar aesthetic. Ristorante di Canaletto features some very pretty furniture that looks extravagant set against the muted pastel walls adorned with paintings. I also appreciate the large fresh flower bouquets throughout the whole restaurant. Compared to other Tokyo Disney restaurants, there is a good amount of space between tables here.

If you aren’t bowled over by the atmosphere yet, then the outdoor seating might be the tipping point. Offering those glorious views of the Venetian Gondolas and canals, the outside area looks like a little square you might happen upon roaming through Italy. The brickwork of the buildings is on full display and the staircase is a textured touch to make the area feel lived in. It’s a perfect spot to sit outside, sip a cold drink on a hot day and just take it all in.

No matter where you’re seated, Ristorante di Canaletto aims to impress. That I’ve made it this far into talking about the atmosphere without even mentioning the open pizza kitchen shows the depth of what’s offered. You can see the brick oven below.

It’s not that the restaurant is what you could stumble upon in Italy. It’s more that it’s the idealized version of what Italy is in my mind. The line in not coming off as an overzealous Olive Garden is thinner than it might seem, but this setting manages to avoid stepping anywhere close to the line. That skill is not easily accomplished in theme parks but the restaurant, and Mediterranean Harbor as a whole, make it look both easy and stunning.

With all of my raving about the atmosphere, you might wonder if the food can live up to the setting. Here’s a look at the menu! Like most table-service restaurants at Tokyo Disney Resort, Ristorante di Canaletto offers a variety of seasonal specials and sets. If you choose to not partake in any of that, the restaurant does seem to carry a few staples all of the time.

This is the Chef’s Salad that is served as part of certain sets but can also be purchased ala carte. Salads in Japan can be a little surprising to a western palate but, once you get past the novelty, they are tasty. For what it’s worth, this one isn’t all that strange with lettuce, parmesan, a few fresh veggies and a few slices of meat. It was a decent portion size at a resort where it isn’t always easy to find your veggies. At 1,020 yen (roughly $7 USD as of October 2024), this amounts to a solid starter salad.

Our previous dining experience at Ristorante di Canaletto saw us ordering pizzas. We remembered them fondly but it had been 6 years so I wanted to try another. Above is the Pizza Biancaneve which includes Prosciutto, Arugula, Tomato, and Mornay Sauce. Everything was fresh and the pizza had a great cheese and oil flavor. The Prosciutto and Arugula both cut that in different ways. I thought the crust was a little too dark but Melissa preferred the crunch. Overall, this was a strong offering and one I’d get again. We had the best pizza I’ve ever tasted a few days prior and this doesn’t measure up to that, but at 2,400 yen (about $16 USD) this was great value and delicious meal.

Not to be outdone, the Black Tagliolini with Shrimp and Crab in Tomato Cream Sauce was our top pick as an entree. I’d liken the sauce to a vodka sauce, where the creaminess was just as present as the tomato. There was a generous portion of seafood in here and the pasta was delicious. As a whole, this was a smaller serving but an excellent theme park meal at only 1,940 yen (about $13).

We came away impressed by the food but maybe not blown away. Once you factor in the value though, not many theme park restaurants offer all that Ristorante di Canaletto has. Our salad plus two entrees and drinks (I had an Italian beer and Melissa an Iced Tea) ended up being just over $40. That’s an incredible value in such a pretty setting. As far as restaurants in Tokyo Disney Resort go, Ristorante di Canaletto is one that we will continue to go back for thanks to the outstanding atmosphere and delicious, affordable food!

Overall Rating – 9.5/10
