Oceano Breakfast Buffet Review

Oceano is a buffet restaurant in Tokyo Disney Resort’s Hotel MiraCosta. The restaurant resides inside of the hotel’s lobby but is not restricted to guests staying at the hotel, anyone can dine there! Oceano is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In this post, we’ll review the restaurant’s breakfast offerings as well as the atmosphere and value.

Sitting inside of Oceano means that you’re also inside of an incredible hotel overlooking the world’s best theme park. Add in an all-you-can-eat element and this seems like a winning proposition, right? I mean, maybe that should be the whole review – there’s as much food as you could want and DisneySea’s waiting for you. When put in the simplest of terms, a meal at Oceano is a no-brainer.

But Wandering in Disney is a stranger to the simplest terms. Why not overcomplicate things? I’m a human with some anxiety after all! The trouble with this buffet, and most other slower paced restaurants and shows at Tokyo Disney Resort, is that it’s time spent elsewhere. Every minute I’m stuffing my face with pastries is a minute I’m not enjoying DisneySea. It’s all a calculation that I haven’t solved yet! And if you think this all sounds like some scientist rambling about a problem that’s driving him mad instead of calmly discussing theme parks and their restaurants, you’re right. But I do promise to never refer to myself as a scientist ever again.

I’ll put aside the time negotiation that foreign guests have to navigate for a minute and discuss the merits of Oceano on their own. As described the Tokyo Disney Resort website, “True to its name, Oceano offers three beautiful ocean-inspired dining areas featuring different designs such as shells and pearls.” Along with that, there’s a viewing deck to observe DisneySea if you time your meal right. That view is wonderful and is a great spot to watch one of the harbor shows.

Inside of the restaurant is gorgeous, blowing away the buffet restaurant standards we have in the domestic parks. The ocean motif goes throughout the restaurant. Once inside, it’s like guests have gone underwater and are surrounded by different decorations you’d find under the sea. Due to eating and breathing concerns, the restaurant isn’t actually underwater. When trying to pull off a theme like this, there seems to be a tendency to over do it. That’s not the case at Oceano as the restaurant manages to keep an upscale atmosphere instead of relying on cheap tricks.

As mentioned, there are several different rooms inside of the restaurant. All of them have slightly different themes. The largest of the rooms has a long brown artistic piece under the ceiling that gives the feeling of the bottom of a ship passing. In other rooms, there was glasswork that took the shape of seaweed, bubbles, pearls and more. Oceano relied on a copper tone mostly with flashes of blue and colorful fish.

The theme and atmosphere are very strong but also not out of the ordinary in Tokyo Disney Resort. Yes, this beats Chef Mickey’s or Goofy’s Kitchen but it’s also not the crème de la crème of themed restaurants. Stateside, I’d compare it to Boma or Tusker House, where the restaurant clearly knows what it’s going for and fits inside of that idea with ease. I do think Oceano is prettier than those two restaurants overall but not outrageously so.

Moving on to the food, there was a wide variety offered at breakfast. Traditional Japanese dishes were represented, as were a number of western breakfast foods. The pastries were not lacking here and there were plenty of ‘safe’ options for those with less adventurous palettes. On the flip side, there were items that are never offered in America so it’s a nice mix.

This was one of the less adventurous plates that I got, with some bacon, sausage, eggs and a few pastries. Yes, there was also some pasta at breakfast. I’m not mad about it! The pastries were one of the stars as the buffet wasn’t lacking in them. Japanese bakeries are some of my favorites in the world and Oceano furthered that belief. Another standout were the caramelized bananas. I don’t remember if that’s what they were actually called but they tasted similar to what you’d find on a Bananas Foster. It wasn’t a complicated dish but they were delicious.

This plate included more of the Japanese specialties. Even with it being breakfast, I was pleasantly surprised with how much fish was offered. There wasn’t much sushi but all of the seafood was tasty, especially the salmon. I also really enjoyed the Miso Soup and was excited to try the Rice Porridge, which ended up being pretty good!

Overall, I thought the spread was good but not great. The buffet could have used another standout item or two but I also didn’t try anything that I disliked. This is a good spot to try a few new foods while also knowing that you’ll find some familiar breakfast items. Similarly to the atmosphere, the food was all really well made but not quite top level.

As of April 2024, breakfast costs 4,000 yen per adult. That comes out to roughly $27. Thanks to the exchange rate, that’s a phenomenal deal. Relative to all other Tokyo Disney restaurants, it’s pretty run of the mill when it comes to cost. I wouldn’t say the food or atmosphere make it significantly better than other restaurants at the resort either, unless you’re able to schedule a reservation around one of the harbor shows. Oceano ends up being a decent bang for your buck and it’s a really good restaurant overall, it’s just nothing out of the ordinary for the resort.

With Oceano being a decent monetary value, that brings us back to the original question. Is Oceano worth your time at Tokyo Disney Resort? With the restaurant being good but not overly special, I don’t think I’d take the time out of a park day to dine here. We went on the day we were leaving the resort and that worked out well, it’s fun to dine somewhere inside of MiraCosta. But even that route likely takes away some time from Tokyo or elsewhere. Oceano ends up being a good restaurant that’s hard to recommend if you’re on limited time in Japan.

Overall Rating – 8/10

  1. i heard if we go to terrace to watch the show, we can’t go back to our seat to continue eating the buffet? is that true?

    • I don’t believe that to be true but don’t have firsthand knowledge. That said, we were told of a time limit but nothing about not being able to come back in the restaurant if we went outside.
