Top Ten Tokyo Disney Resort Attractions

We’ve constantly touted Tokyo DisneySea and Tokyo Disneyland as two of the best theme parks in the world. They are home to immersive theme, interesting entertainment, exceptional dining, and, of course, fantastic attractions. Rides are the lifeblood of theme parks and Tokyo Disney Resort has some of the best. After working our way through Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World, this post ranks the top ten attractions at Tokyo Disney Resort’s two theme parks.

Like the previous 2 installments, this post considered any ride, 3D movie, or walkthrough attraction. Essentially, there’s no live entertainment included. There are nearly 60 attractions at these 2 parks combined, a number that is only 2nd to Disneyland Resort.

The quality keeps up with the quantity, as DisneySea offers far better options than other second gates around the world. Because of that, this top ten list is far more equal in terms of amount of rides from each park than the Disneyland edition of this post. No offense to California Adventure, but it can’t even come close to what DisneySea offers.

Not to be overly self-referential, but this post does follow our attraction rankings for both parks pretty closely. I ranked these based on story, ride system, animatronics, soundtrack, immersion, and a few other characteristics that make rides great. There’s meant to be an objectivity to it all, as this isn’t necessarily how I’d rank my 10 favorite rides at TDR. That said, I am only human and there’s definitely some Blogger List Making™ involved. We’re about half a year from revisiting this ranking once Tokyo Disneyland’s new Space Mountain debuts, so we’ll see how my future self agrees with my current self.

One last note is that I do find it hard to be objective about the original attractions at TDR versus the classics replicated from Disneyland and WDW. The replicas are truly some of the best versions of their attraction, thanks to phenomenal upkeep but it’s hard to shake the newness of it all.

Naturally, there’s some honorable mentions! We’ll share those first 5 with a shorter explanation before hopping to the top ten. Let’s get to it!

15. Jungle Cruise (TDL) – Jungle Cruise skippers make up for the language barrier here by being more animated, making this a hilarious experience.
14. Venetian Gondolas (TDS) – Sailing through Mediterranean Harbor on the gondola is the most serene attraction in any Disney Park.
13. Fortress Explorations (TDS) – One of the best walkthrough attractions in the world has guests exploring the castle under Mount Prometheus.
12. Haunted Mansion (TDL) – It may not be original but this ride is amazing no matter if you’ve seen it before or not.
11. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (TDL) – Like Haunted Mansion, this feels very familiar but is still fantastic!

10. Country Bear Jamboree (TDL)

For some, placing Country Bear Jamboree in the top ten may have you questioning this post’s credibility. I’ll admit, there are bigger thrills, more impressive ride technology, and other worthy top ten candidates. But they are no match for Henry, Big Al, and the rest of these singing animatronic bears! The Tokyo Disneyland edition of this attraction shows the classic show in its entirety, switching back and forth between Japanese and English. There’s also the summer vacation and Christmas version offered! Country Bear Jamboree is perfect, having an offbeat sense of humor and weirdness that modern day Disney doesn’t embrace as often. Frankly, this should be in the top 5 but I’ll compromise with the haters.

9. Tower of Terror (TDS)

This doesn’t have the incredible ride system that Twilight Zone of Tower of Terror in Hollywood Studios has, instead it is like the one in California Adventure. The reason this easily makes the list is due to the storytelling. This version of the ride offers a unique story that is incredibly well told, being clear while having some sophisticated themes.

8. Journey to the Center of the Earth (TDS)

Going down into a volcano, seeing a monster, and getting spit out of the mountain is an extraordinary premise for a theme park ride. The actual ride is less of a thrill then it is an exploration. That makes the payoff a little underwhelming for some, which is a fair critique. Still, the sights and setup are worthy of inclusion on this list just on their own. Add in the allure that this is inside of DisneySea’s spectacular icon and you have an exceptional attraction.

7. Pirates of the Caribbean (TDL)

Tokyo Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean is most similar to the classic Disneyland version of the ride. The classic Disneyland attraction is my favorite ride in the world so I’m going to like this one! The facade and entrance are understated in this version of Pirates, and it’s a little shorter than the classic version, but the animatronics and story are unmatched.

6. Splash Mountain (TDL)

Splash Mountain still exists at Tokyo Disneyland. Not only that, but this was our favorite version of the ride before the other ones closed down. It’s definitely our favorite version of the ride now, since there aren’t any others! Math. You don’t get as drenched on this one and all of the classic characters are in working order. Along with the thrilling log ride, there’s a great little mini-land around Splash that features cute critters!

5. Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure (TDS)

We’re getting into some tough decisions now! Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure might be the most fun attraction in Tokyo Disney Resort. No matter if it’s your first or hundredth experience on the ride, it’s impossible not to be smiling during the ride. Bouncing, sailing, and soaring through Neverland is a joy!

4. Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast (TDL)

It took was too long for there to be a Beauty and the Beast ride but the wait might have been worth it. Enchanted Tale is a trackless dark ride, taking guests through some of the classic scenes and tunes in the film. The ride’s scale is massive, nailing being inside of Beast’s Castle. There’s beautiful moments, a fantastic trick, and a glorious facade.

3. Sinbad’s Storybook Voyage (TDS)

This attraction, featuring Sinbad and his trusty tiger sidekick, Chandu, takes guests on a slow boat ride that showcase the titular character’s journey. Sinbad’s Storybook Voyage is among the best dark rides in the world, featuring great scene after scene. There are so many memorable characters and moments throughout the ride and it has one of the best on-ride songs of any Disney attraction ever.

2. Anna & Elsa’s Frozen Journey (TDS)

My description of Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast applies here, except this time you’re on a boat! This ride tells the story of Frozen but does so in a way that only a theme park attraction could. Instead of feeling like a book report, this feels cinematic, with every angle accounted for. Anna & Elsa’s Frozen Journey is like a classic Fantasy ride made in the modern era.

1. Pooh’s Hunny Hunt (TDL)

The first true trackless dark ride is still one of the best in the whole world! This Fantasyland attraction debuted back in 2000 and is still a marvel, combining cuteness, chaos, innovation and heffalumps into 5 minutes of whimsy. Pooh’s Hunny Hunt is extremely re-rideable, which isn’t always the case for the trackless system. You can’t go wrong with picking any of the top 5 as the best Tokyo Disney Resort attraction, but Winnie the Pooh wins this one for us.
