Pizza Moon Review

Pizza Moon is a quick-service restaurant in Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe. Sitting on the left side of Celestial Park, the eatery serves, you guessed it, pizza as well as pasta and salad. Having fun props, a unique setting and quality food has made this an immediate fan favorite. In this post, we’ll review Pizza Moon’s atmosphere, cuisine and value!

The hype for Pizza Moon blasted into the atmosphere seemingly from the day Epic Universe opened its gates. When the biggest complaint you hear about a place is the lack of to-go boxes (which has been remedied, by the way) then it’s safe to assume it is well liked. For good reason, the restaurant replaces the typical drab theme park pizza and instead offers creative, fresh and tasty pies.

Pizza Moon has felt like the poster child for Epic Universe restaurants as a whole. Universal Orlando’s pre-existing parks (Studios and Islands of Adventure) do not have good dining options, especially once you’re outside of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter sections. When dining in the chain-heavy and largely mediocre CityWalk is the best option, there are some issues.

Epic Universe clearly heard those complaints. We dined at Das Stakehaus and Café L’air De La Sirène on our first trip to the park and came away very impressed with both, especially the latter. From my own experiences and in reading and talking to others, the food isn’t something to avoid at the new theme park but is a highlight instead! As I mentioned, one of the first places to usually come out of people’s mouths (or keyboards) when talking about the dining options is Pizza Moon. We went to go see if the hype was real.

The restaurant is on the left of Celestial Park, sitting between Super Nintendo World and Dark Universe. Like most things in the park’s central land, the restaurant’s story feels a bit shoehorned (at least to me) in but it does exist. As the Universal Orlando website explains, the famous Théâtre de L’Imagination Lunaire, an early 1900s Victorian theater, has been transformed into Pizza Moon. The entrance certainly does have that look to it, with a theatre marquee featuring the restaurant’s name and some fun art pieces.

Once inside of Pizza Moon, the theater idea is less convincing but that doesn’t negatively impact the experience. There are lavish colors and fun props throughout. Dropping the whole theater storyline and leaning into the cheesy (pun intended) moon and pizza title is a good way to go.

All of the seating throughout the restaurant is pretty ordinary but the walls, ceilings and arches make for a fun atmosphere. The kitchen sits at the head of the restaurant, with more oversized props like a giant cheese block and a rocket crash landing on the moon. There’s a playfulness throughout the restaurant.

Technically, Pizza Moon is without doorways but it feels like there’s almost a separate room off to the side. Floor (well, nearly) to ceiling windows line one side and the overhead decor matches Constellation Carousel, which is a stone’s throw away. This room is less Pizza Moon-esque but is certainly the prettiest spot in the restaurant. That area feels less crowded too and would be our pick on a place to sit.

There’s also seating outside but I didn’t think the area was anything special, outside of a few nice views into the center of the park. This is Florida after all, sitting inside is the better option like 90% of the time for people like me who can’t take the humidity.

Overall, we like the atmosphere in Pizza Moon. It can’t keep up with Das Stakehaus or Café L’air De La Sirène in beauty or theme, but not many places can! Instead it opts for a quirky and whimsical look that goes hand-in-hand with the restaurant’s wordplay.

Moving on to the food, here’s a link to the menu. Universal doesn’t add prices to their online menus, frustratingly, but most of the options here are in the $15-$20 range. That’s in line with most of the quick-service options in Epic Universe but there’s a good argument to be made that the bang for the buck is greater here. Like elsewhere at Universal Orlando, guests take a seat and then mobile order while scanning the table number. Food will then be brought out to you once it’s ready. There’s a bar off to the side as well as a few Coke Freestyle machines in the back left corner of the restaurant.

Pizza Moon caesar salad Epic Universe (1 of 1)

We started with the Moon Cheese Caesar which includes chopped romaine, Moon Cheese™ (the trademark here really got me), Caesar dressing, grated parmesan, and croutons. The salad is $13.99 as of typing this and was a pretty standard salad. It was maybe a little overdressed but tasted fresh. We both liked the croutons and the trademarked Moon Cheese. It’s a refreshing dish to add to your pizza.

Pizza Moon margherita pizza Epic Universe (1 of 1)

Speaking of, this is the Nanarossa ($18.99) consisting of tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, stracciatella, heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil. Kindly ignore the pink lights coming off the pizza, I promise it was a reflection from the ceiling and not bioluminescent moon dust™. This amounts to a margherita pizza and is a good one! We both really liked the the tomato sauce crust. In hindsight, we maybe would have gone with one of the more creative options but it’s hard to pass up a classic. This is very tasty, especially if some of the other pizzas aren’t calling to you.

Pizza Moon mushroom pizza Epic Universe (1 of 1)

For a slightly more creative option, this is the The Giant Mushroom. The ingredients are roasted garlic béchamel, fromage de lune, wild mushrooms, truffle aioli, and parsley. Melissa and I liked this pizza the most out of the two, as the wild and earthy mushrooms paired perfectly with the rich garlic and aioli flavors. With the lack of sauce, this option felt a little lighter. Well, it felt lighter until I nearly ate a full 12″ pizza by myself then it really did not feel lighter.

All of the pizzas are 12 inches and could conceivably be shared. Larger appetites might not go for that, especially if you’re putting in the miles at Epic Universe. Personally, I’d go with 2 pizzas and a salad if you have a group of 4. If there’s just 2 of you then a pizza and salad is a good way to go. If you’re going solo, take the risk and just try to eat the whole thing! I believe in you. There are to-go boxes though.

We were very impressed with the pizza. This won’t be the best food you’ve ever had or anything but it’s high quality and significantly better than any other quick-service pizza I’ve ever had. It’s also a relatively great deal. Getting a pie for under 20 bucks that’s large enough to share is the best value in the park.

Pizza Moon dessert Epic Universe (1 of 1)

We ordered the Lunar Phase Cake for dessert despite being very full. Research! This consists of Meyer lemon olive oil cake, limoncello sabayon, blackberries, raspberry crisps. I liked the cake pretty well, it had good flavor but was a touch dry. The limoncello sabayon helped that dryness but didn’t add the depth of flavor that either of us were hoping for. It’s a good dessert but there are better in Epic Universe.

Don’t let the dessert dissuade you though, Pizza Moon is absolutely one of the best places to eat in Universal Orlando. Between the fun atmosphere, great value and excellent food, the restaurant lives up to the astronomical hype! So far, it’s our second favorite spot in Epic Universe and one we highly recommend.

Overall Rating – 9/10
