Magic Kingdom’s Lightning Lane Multi Pass Strategy

Walt Disney World has a way to reserve attractions you’d like to ride ahead of a park visit. That system is called Lightning Lane Multi Pass. This was previously known as Genie+ but that system didn’t have the ability to reserve ahead. Before that and a worldwide pandemic, this was known as FastPass+ but it was free. Yeah, there’s been a confusing amount of change and naming! In this post, we’ll breakdown the best use of Lightning Lane Multi Pass in Magic Kingdom.

If there’s a park that we’d recommend splurging for Lightning Lane Multi Pass, it’s Magic Kingdom. While other Walt Disney World parks would certainly be fun with the skip the line option, none of those offer as many attractions that are strong uses of Lightning Lane as the castle park. As of January 2026, 16 attractions are included in the pass, 4 in tier 1 and 12 in tier 2. We expect that to jump to 18 when Big Thunder and Buzz Lightyear rejoin the roster in a few months.

That number doesn’t account for the Single Use Lightning Lane that guests could purchase for Tron Lightcyle Run and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Single Use Lightning Lanes are not a good value and we recommend skipping them but the Multi Pass would be beneficial especially if you’re only spending only one day in Magic Kingdom. Somewhat surprisingly, meet & greets and the parade aren’t included but that should make the standby waits faster for those.

Purchasing the pass can happen 7 days in advance of your hotel stay if you’re staying on-site, 3 days ahead of your park visit if not. Guests can purchase Lightning Lane passes for days they have valid theme park admission starting at 7:00 AM Eastern Time on their first day of eligibility. I know it’s early, especially for west coasters like me, but I do recommend waking up for that time. If you’re going to splurge on this then you might as well get the best options possible and the way to do that is right when they go on sale. Make sure all of your group’s tickets are linked in the app before purchasing.

Once purchased and the park day has rolled around, guests will have 3 reserved Lightning Lanes. Once one of those attraction windows come up (or you’ve checked into the ride) then a new reservation can be made for whatever is available. With so many attractions at Magic Kingdom, there should be some decent options left to keep reserving throughout the day. To accomplish as much as possible, keep reserving as soon as you check in for a ride. One of the biggest plusses of this new system is that it’s a rolling 3 attractions to reserve and you don’t have to complete all 3 pre-reserved passes first.

Like the rest of the Walt Disney World Multi Passes, Magic Kingdom has split the attractions into tiers. For some reason, they didn’t follow our attraction rankings to make these tiers! Just kidding. In advance, guests can reserve a single tier 1 attraction and 2 attractions from tier 2. Once the park day comes and you’ve completed one attraction then whatever’s left can be reserved. With that in mind, we recommend scheduling at least 2 of the Lightning Lanes early in the day.

In this post, we’ll rank the tiers separately. A general rule of thumb is that if there’s a tier 1 attraction available to you as the park day goes along then book that over any tier 2 attraction. The one exception might be Haunted Mansion but even that is a close call. One other note to keep in mind is that you can only use Lightning Lane once per attraction.

We’ll start with the Tier 1 Lightning Lane rankings before moving to Tier 2. These are not in order of what our favorites are but instead what is the best use of a Lightning Lane. More than anything, this post is here to help you stay out of line. Naturally, these rankings do follow some of our attraction rankings but they are being judged off of different things. If you have questions about how Multi Pass works or our rankings, let us know in the comments below!

Tier 1 Lightning Lane Attractions

1. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure – This new attraction will hold the top spot for at least a while longer in the rankings. This is still the choice although wait times have gone down in the winter. If you’re going at an especially cold time of year, it could be moved down. I’d aim for a 9 or 10 AM reservation here so then it’s warmer, instead of getting stuck with a nighttime ride.

2. Peter Pan’s Flight – If you miss out on Tiana’s or falling 50 feet isn’t something you want to subject your toddler to, then Peter Pan’s Flight is our next choice. This Fantasyland attraction is still one of Magic Kingdom’s best and consistently has one of the longest lines in the park. Maybe the biggest downside of Multi Pass in Magic Kingdom is that you can’t book both this and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. If either of them pop up during your park day after completing the other then consider yourself very lucky! If you choose this over Tiana’s, I’d try for a reservation right at park opening.

3. Space Mountain – The Tomorrowland roller coaster narrowly sneaks into our 3rd spot. Being one of the main thrill rides at Magic Kingdom, Space Mountain always has long waits and I can’t say that I think the queue is all that interesting. Realistically, I’d try for this in the morning via standby but there’s a chance you can grab this on the app right after you complete your first Lightning Lane of the day.

4. Jungle Cruise – Jungle Cruise would be a worthy 3rd place finisher on this list. In the heat of the day, the attraction draws long lines and it isn’t a pleasant wait unless you like the smell of body odor and enjoy sweating. If that’s the case, you’d probably like it! The reason I have it 4th is because the lines die down early in the morning and in the evening. Put this on the top of the priority list to grab after your first attraction is completed, you might get lucky!

Tier 2 Attractions

I’m going to keep these explanations shorter because, well, some of these attractions aren’t worth using a Lightning Lane or having me talking about them.

1. Haunted Mansion – This is easily the best choice among the tier 2 attractions. This should be your focus on reserving ahead of time. Not only is it one of the best attractions in the park but skipping the hot, outside line is very nice.

2. Pirates of the Caribbean – The standby line at Pirates (and Haunted Mansion) moves fast but it’s worth reserving thanks to the high popularity. For lack of better tier 2 options, this is an easy pick.

3. it’s a small world – If you want to do this in the afternoon then I’d absolutely recommend a Lightning Lane. Other times of the day aren’t as necessary.

4. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh – The standby lines here are a little hard to predict. This isn’t a great attraction but it’s nice to skip the line for a family attraction.

5. Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid – I feel weird recommending using a Lightning Lane on this because the queue is superior to the ride. But it can be a longer standby wait than the rest of these so here we are!

6. Dumbo the Flying Elephant – On busy days, this isn’t a bad selection. Especially if you have little ones with you.

7. Tomorrowland Speedway – If you enjoy humidity and the smell of gasoline, do I have a place for you! A Lightning Lane here is essential in the summer. So why does it rank 8th? Because it’s not worth doing in the first place. Still, if you have kids in your life that won’t let you pass this up then move it up a few spots.

8. Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor – This is a big show with a large capacity. On a busy day the Lightning Lane might help a little but not enough for me to rank it higher. Standby is almost as efficient!

9. The Magic Carpets of Aladdin – The queue here is miserable but I can’t recommend using a Lightning Lane here. I despise the attraction and prefer everything else on the list (even the ones I’ve ranked below it) more than Magic Carpets.

10. The Barnstormer – This surprisingly fun kiddie coaster doesn’t have long waits at night and the Lightning Lane doesn’t skip much of the line in the first place.

11. Mickey’s PhilharMagic – Another big show where the Lightning Lane won’t help much. We’ve entered the section of the list where it might be less efficient to pull your phone out and book these instead of just walking over and joining the standby line. PhilharMagic is fun though!

12. Mad Tea Party – This classic just doesn’t draw long lines. You could do this if it was the only thing left though! Although it might be better to just join the standby and then refresh the app to see if anyone cancels other reservations.

There’s some great rides on the list but there’s also a lot of filler. Multi Pass isn’t necessary for the latter but should help you breeze through a few of Magic Kingdom’s best attractions in order to enjoy the rest of your day!
