Hong Kong Disneyland Updates: Spider-Man Attraction, Pixar Show & Moana Restaurant

A slew of announcements were made about Hong Kong Disneyland on Friday, including an update on a highly anticipated ride. The resort is in the midst of its 20th anniversary celebration and continues to evolve. There’s exciting updates about the new Spider-Man attraction, a new Pixar stage show and the now open Moana-themed restaurant. In this post, we’ll share the updates for them all!

Hong Kong Disneyland’s Spider-Man Attraction

At the D23 Expo in Anaheim last year, Josh D’Amaro announced that a new Spider-Man ride was coming to Hong Kong. Here was the meat of the announcement:

Expanding Stark Expo, there’s an all-new attraction coming to Hong Kong Disneyland. Tony Stark has invited his friend, and new Stark Industries intern, Peter Parker to showcase some new inventions. Unfortunately, that also means this has caught the attention of one of Spidey’s most formidable villains. While trying to help Spider-Man protect the new tech, guests caught in the middle of the action!

Accompanying that was some concept art (seen above) that appeared to show a drop ride akin to Tower of Terror. That ride system was confirmed today as Hong Kong Disneyland released more concept art for the upcoming ride. It looks as if Spidey will have some help from his other superhero friends!

Hong Kong Disneyland has slowly but surely been increasing the Marvel footprint at the park. In a corner of Tomorrowland, the expansion began with a Stark Expo and Iron Man ride before turning Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters into Ant-Man and the Wasp: Nano Battle. While several projects have been announced and later scrapped, the new Spider-Man ride will come to fruition a few years down the road.

The idea behind the expansion is that everything is based around Stark Expo. Other supers are going to come show off their newest technology and, inevitably something will go terribly wrong! In Spider-Man’s case, it looks like he attracted Doc Ock (one of the franchise’s most popular villains) to the area. At least that’s what the initial concept art showed. That may have changed now that the attraction appears to be a little more of an Avengers ride.

As for commentary on the ride, there’s not much to offer yet as I always caution against snap judgments based on concept art. It does appear that Black Panther, Dr. Strange and Thor will all be featured in the ride. Pretty solid lineup! I’m not a huge Marvel fan at this point but would love to see a Black Panther attraction in the future.

I’m good with a drop ride, as well. The thrilling system has proven to work time and again. I expect this attraction to take a page out of Mission: BREAKOUT’s playbook, featuring some humor and quality screen work mixed with the drops.

This concept art was also released today and it appears that the ride will be housed in the Avengers Tower. While I’m not a big fan of the Avengers Campus aesthetic, this looks nice enough and should add some depth to the land.

New Pixar Stage Show!

Elsewhere at Hong Kong Disneyland, plans for a new Pixar stage show were announced! Here’s the announcement with accompanying concept art via the company’s social media page:

Some of your favorite Pixar pals are coming to Hong Kong Disneyland in an all-new immersive theatrical experience celebrating the joy of friendship and the power of play.

As much as we’d all love a Monsters, Inc. stage show, it’s pretty safe to assume that this is more of a montage show featuring a variety of Pixar characters. Nothing wrong with that. Montage shows have been Disney Parks preference as of late and have worked to varying degrees. For what it’s worth, the scene depicted in the concept art looks great! But it’s too soon to make any judgments, either positive or negative. For now, we’ll say that new entertainment is a great thing.

This addition will be added between the recent World of Frozen expansion and Toy Story Land.

Moana-Themed Wayfinders’ Table Now Open, Menu Revealed

Announced at Destination D23 a couple of weeks ago, a new Moana restaurant is now open at Hong Kong Disneyland! Wayfinders’ Table is a counter-service spot offering an interesting menu. I’m relieved that Pua and Hei Hei are not included on that menu. Here are a few more details on the restaurant’s decor as well as a look at the food offered.

The restaurant’s interior depicts Moana’s journey with art that highlights wayfinding techniques such as observing stars, birds, ocean swells, wind patterns, and storytelling. The exterior gable depicts the stunning icon of Motufetū, connecting powerful architecture with familiar stories.

Immerse yourself in this one-of-a-kind quick service dining experience, complete with decorative art, ceiling murals, and an oceanic ambiance that transports you into the familiar stories of Moana and her friends. Celebrate legendary architecture and culture with a delicious Halal-certified, island-inspired menu that will make you want to journey beyond the reef. Let’s dive in!
