Walt Disney World’s Top Ten Attractions to Ride at Night

Nighttime is the best time at Disney Parks. From the spectacular shows to the lands coming to life with twinkling lights, everything feels better when the hot Florida sun has set. That feeling extends to attractions too, as some are better experienced at night than during the day. After doing the same for Disneyland earlier this week, we move over to Walt Disney World to share our top ten attractions to ride at night!

After a surprisingly light field on the west coast, Disney World is stacked with outdoor rides that look great at night. On top of that, there’s only 2 crossovers that made the list at both Disneyland and WDW!

It came as a bit of a surprise when writing this that there are so many more outdoor attractions in Florida than California. You’d think with the differences in weather, namely that standard mid-afternoon summer thunderstorm in WDW, that the opposite would occur. Pointing to four parks versus two sounds all well and good but Disneyland Resort has just as many attractions as Walt Disney World despite half as many parks.

What Disneyland Resort doesn’t have is the space that Central Florida provides. Outdoor attractions take up more room, because you’re not hiding the actual ride building, behind a facade, in a backstage area. It’s all there for everyone to see! Disneyland has room for a few of the many Magic Kingdom attractions on this list, but definitely not all of them.

Having the space to see a full track layout is one of WDW’s greatest strengths. Watching those layouts illuminated in the various lighting packages is a treat. Not to go back to comparisons, but Disneyland mornings are delightfully charming. Magic Kingdom, Epcot and Hollywood Studios all thrive at night though.

As with our previous post, the main way I ranked and judged these was based off of the amount of thrill added at night, how the ride looks illuminated and different effects that are best shown. Just like the previous post, everything is ranked based on the actual ride experience. Facades and queues were hardly considered.

To no ones surprise, there were a few left off the list! My friends would say the only thing I like to do more than ranking stuff is add an honorable mention category to those rankings. Here goes! Magic Kingdom’s Barnstormer is a dumb kid coaster but is way more fun at night. Right near there is Astro Orbiter, which holds the title of scariest spinner in a Disney Park. That’s especially true at night.

Animal Kingdom’s Kilimanjaro Safari is certainly different after dark. Is it better? No, but it’s interesting if you get the chance. Living with the Land is also fun in the dark as the greenhouse has some lighting that’s especially enjoyable at Christmas. Hollywood Studios has Alien Swirling Saucers as far as outdoor rides, but the queue to Star Tours is especially cool at night. But, it’s a queue so it didn’t make it.

Finally, Impressions de France in Epcot only plays at night so… I mean, it’s way better at night than when it’s not playing during the day. It didn’t make the list because it wasn’t in the spirit of the rest of the attractions but consider this a plea to go see Impressions de France during the limited hours it’s on. I’ll end this paragraph before an extended rant occurs.

I’m sure there are others I’ve missed so let me know in the comments! Let’s get to the top ten.

10. Dumbo the Flying Elephant (MK)

Like the Disneyland edition of this post, I stuck to just one spinner for the top 10. Dumbo eclipsed Astro Orbiter because of the beautiful reds and blues illuminated on the ride. Flying up high and seeing the rest of Fantasyland as well as the castle above the trees is also wonderful. This one doesn’t feel as if you’re about to fall off to your death like the Orbiter, which is always a plus for me.

9. Slinky Dog Dash (DHS)

This family coaster is a good amount of fun, regardless of the time of day. But I’ve yet to find a roller coaster that isn’t better at night. The track here is illuminated in an enjoyable way, looking great against the darker spaces in Toy Story Land. Also, who doesn’t want to see a giant illuminated Rex? He’s the best!

8. Jungle Cruise (MK)

Everything I said about Jungle Cruise in the Disneyland post rings true here. The skippers are looser, and generally funnier, at night. That’s worth the trade off of not being able to see the animals as clearly. Magic Kingdom also has a temple the boats go through that’s prettier at night because the adjustment on the eyes is easier.

7. TTA PeopleMover (MK)

The amount of Magic Kingdom attractions isn’t going to slow down. There’s a good case to be made that every single ride there is better at night. This classic has ascended from cult status to just being a crowd favorite. Hopping on the PeopleMover after 10 straight hours in the park and kicking your feet up is a glorious experience. Riding it during Christmas time, being able to see Magic Kingdom in all of its holiday glory is special. It’s a perfect, relaxing nighttime ride.

6. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (MK)

I can see a case being made that Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is better during the day. To be honest, I was slightly underwhelmed by the lighting package of the ride when it debuted. But over the years it has grown on me, adding some nice night color to a fairly dark portion of Magic Kingdom. There’s a little more thrill at night too, coming out of the mines before the drop specifically.

5. Journey of Water (Epcot)

This walkthrough experience makes it surprisingly high on the list and isn’t actually a ride. Am I breaking my own rules here? If I am, it’s because this attraction is so beautiful that I can’t help myself. The water effects still play at night and the lighting on the final topiary plus the last stop are extraordinary. Journey of Water is a prime example of how attractions can be plussed at night.

4. Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (DHS)

Even me, a huge scaredy cat, can appreciate the spookiness of Tower of Terror at night. There’s only a few seconds to look out at all of lights across Disney World lit up against the dark sky. Or is the darkness just a void as you’ve been sucked into the ghost realm? These are the things to consider when falling 13 stories, and what feels like to your death. Oh yeah, the facade looks absolutely amazing at night too. Sorry, almost forgot to mention that while thinking about mortality.

3. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (MK)

Our first place finisher at Disneyland ends up number 3 on this list. Part of that is because of the strength of the top two. Working against Big Thunder is the lack of effects in the mines, although that’s set to change when the ride reopens in 2026. The sprawling layout looks incredible against the dark sky. Along with that, the coaster is way more exciting in the dark!

2. Expedition Everest (AK)

I’ve been debating the top 2 of this list for a couple of days at this point. Fair or not, Everest finishes second because of how strong the ride is during the day. It’s one of the best WDW rides no matter when you go and that kind of works against it. That said, going at night is so exciting and on another level. Disco Yeti is best seen at night, naturally. There’s also incredibly unique views and less sense of direction in the dark. Everest is one of my favorite nighttime rides anywhere!

1. Tron Lightcycle/Run (MK)

Recency bias might be playing a role here but this has to be the coolest looking attraction in the world in the dark. It makes me want to put on a Daft Punk-esque helmet and dance around while speeding on the back of this bike coaster. I haven’t done that yet. The way the track and canopy light up as you zoom by is spectacular. Tron is fun during the day but nighttime is on another level!
