Concept Art & Details Revealed for Piston Peak Cars Land in Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom is set to undergo a years long change with a Cars themed land replacing Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. This project was announced at the 2024 D23 Expo and now more details have been released, including a concept map of the land. Imagineering has also detailed some of the inspiration behind the new land’s aesthetic. In this post, we’ll share those details before adding our own commentary.

Before we get to the news from today, let’s briefly recap what we already knew about the project. The Cars area will not be a replica of Cars Land in California Adventure but rather a mini land in Magic Kingdom. This will take the place of Tom Sawyer Island and, presumably, will be under the Frontierland banner. A path extending beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will provide access to the area, as well as one from the Liberty Square/Fantasyland area. Think Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland as an example in terms of access.

The Cars area will feature two new attractions. Set outside of Radiator Springs, guests will zip around a mountain region and off road-terrain in a rally race. The second attraction will be smaller in scale, likely a flat ride for all ages.

Now, we’ve got some new information, including a ‘Fun Map’, to digest!

Westward Ho! Crossing into New Frontiers at Magic Kingdom

Since the early days of Magic Kingdom, adventurous guests have traveled across space and time as they pass from Liberty Square to Frontierland. Starting with architectural influences from upstate New York and colonial America in Liberty Square, before traveling to a bear-y fun concert in the North Woods, a stop by New Orleans at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and ending in the Arizona bluffs at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

At the heart of all these stories are heroic characters with a belief in themselves that helped forge a path to their dreams. To continue this journey in great American storytelling, Piston Peak National Park will be part of the largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom.

Welcome to Piston Peak National Park

Imagine an awe-inspiring wilderness filled with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers and impressive geysers. While fictional, Piston Peak is inspired by the Rocky Mountain area and the history and iconic sights of the American Frontier and its national parks.

Inside Piston Peak, guests will be able to see and explore the visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, trails and more all set within the Disney and Pixar “Cars” universe. To make sure these buildings fit naturally within the surrounding majestic landscapes, Imagineers are using a style of architecture called “Parkitecture,” which was developed by the National Park Service to create structures that harmonize with the natural environment.

From the outside, trees will provide a natural barrier between the off-road rally and other parts of Frontierland and Liberty Square. Rugged mountains with dramatic peaks will be nestled along a calming waterway across from Grizzly Hall and soaring geysers from the famed Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will stretch into the trails of our off-road rally.

Commentary

As always, concept art and details from the Disney Parks Blog are fluid. Any takeaways I come up with are projections that may not come true. This new area is still 3 years away, at minimum. What the ‘Fun Map’ does show is how Piston Peak will fit into Frontierland. The trails into the land are easy to follow and it’s easy to ascertain the vibe they’re going for.

In that same vein, it appears that Frontierland is going to be seen as a group of mini lands. Earlier today, Mouse Hacking made note that this is the first time Disney has ever referred to the area around Grizzly Hall as the North Woods. I don’t know if that will last but gives us a clue into how Imagineers are trying to frame this section of the park.

Between the grouping of sections and the (perhaps eye-roll inducing) use of ‘Parkitecture’, Disney is doing a hard sell on this Cars area fitting into Magic Kingdom. To their credit, they are saying all of the right things. Views of the Cars thrill ride will apparently be blocked off from Liberty Square, as will sound. This is great news, assuming it’s executed properly.

Likewise, taking inspiration from Rocky Mountain National Park is encouraging. I have some confusion as to why a Cars attraction needs to be in Magic Kingdom if the setting isn’t in Radiator Springs. But I don’t represent the common park goer, who will likely be excited about a Cars themed attraction regardless of setting. Piston Peak Park (which I will call PPP way too many times in the future) needs to hit a home run with the waterfalls and rockwork. Thankfully, it seems like Imagineering is focused on that.

Speaking of water, the ‘Fun Map’ does appear to have a boardwalk along water on the existing Frontierland side. This would ease some of my frustration with getting rid of Rivers of America. The current boardwalk and docks are one of my favorite areas in Magic Kingdom, a beautiful respite from the busy castle park. Having some form of that retained in the restructured Frontierland would be a big deal.

The map is also encouraging in how lush it looks. There are trees everywhere. Matching that with the waterway and rockwork could make for a beautiful land. I think it’s a little early for me to comment on what’s in the land, I’ll wait on more details. I’m hopeful that a few remnants of Tom Sawyer Island can stay.

You can tell from the map that different areas in Piston Peak are working to fit in with what’s across from them. Across from Liberty Square is a large waterfall and snow capped mountains (the snow is questionable but I digress). Beside Grizzly Hall is more of a forest-y region with trees. Near Big Thunder Mountain is where the area dries up a little bit. This thoughtfulness has me cautiously optimistic about the fit.

This doesn’t soften the blow of losing Rivers of America or Tom Sawyer Island for me. I’m still as disappointed as ever in that move. What I am trying to do, moving forward, is compartmentalize the two. I can be excited about new attractions in Magic Kingdom while still lamenting my favorite area of the park being removed. Piston Peak looks intriguing and Imagineering seems to be putting a lot of thought into it. I appreciate that and am looking forward to more details about the project in the coming years.
