All Star Movies Resort Review

All Star Movies Resort is an on-site hotel in the Animal Kingdom area of Walt Disney World. Like the other All Star Resorts, Movies fits into the value resort category and routinely is among the cheapest of the WDW hotels. The hotel has a larger than life Disney movies theme with oversized props from Toy Story, Mighty Ducks, Fantasia and more. In this post, we’ll review the All Star Movies rooms, amenities, perks and value while sharing photos.

There are a few decisions that lead to picking out an All Star Resort on a Disney World vacation. I present to you the three approximate steps in selecting an All Star resort, along with reasons that would lead you to do so:

  1. The decision is made to stay on-site at Walt Disney World.
    • The on-site advantage is back at WDW! Some reasons for that include:
      • Early morning entry into the parks. Guests staying on-site can get into each park half an hour early.
      • The Disney World ‘bubble’. Some love it, some hate it! But it is nice to get inside of the bubble and not have to worry about transportation again.
      • Location! Hard to be closer to the parks than staying at on-site hotel.
      • There’s some other smaller reasons but let’s move along!
  2. Decide to stay at an All Star Resort.
    • Reasons that led you here:
      • You want the on-site experience but don’t want to pay an arm and a leg.
      • You decide to splurge elsewhere on your trip so spending less on the hotel is ideal.
      • You really, really like oversized figures and decor!
  3. Decide on All Star Movies (or Music or Sports)
    • How you got here:
      • You like movies more than sports or music (or however you decide).
      • You want a perfect marriage of sports and movies, opting to stay in the Mighty Ducks section of All Star Movies.
      • You just picked whatever was available.
      • You have a Disney website and are just trying to review all of the gosh darn hotels.
All Star Movies Love Bug

To be fair, there are nits to pick with the last section. There are different reasons to stay in one of three All Star Resorts outside of picking what your favorite hobby is. For instance, maybe you really like sports but your vacation falls on a week where there is a giant youth sports competition. You don’t want to be overrun by 11-year-old flag football teams (God bless ’em) so that leads you to booking a different All Star Resort.

All Star Movies Woody

But there’s also a little secret that I’m willing to divulge. All Star Movies Resort is better than the other two options. The gap isn’t all that wide – the rooms are essentially replicas and the amenities aren’t all that different. But All Star Movies excels in being a little more secluded than Sports or Music. I also prefer the outside decor and theme here, and not just because I love movies!

All Star Movies feels like Art of Animation before there was Art of Animation. There is the exception of Mighty Ducks and Love Bug being live action but even those wings feel animated with their props. In total, there are 5 movies represented in the different sections of the resort – Toy Story, 101 Dalmatians, Fantasia, Love Bug and Mighty Ducks. Not exactly the most current lineup but it’s charming in a way.

All Star Movies Buzz

For the most part, the oversized characters and props outside look good! The Toy Story area specifically has a giant Buzz and Woody that welcome guests into the section. Over in Fantasia, there’s this fella who may or may not give you nightmares…

All Star Movies Jack in the Box

That’s not a good photo but I had to include it just so you could all understand my fright while walking around at 1 AM and turning the corner to see that.

To their credit, Love Bug and Mighty Duck props still look great despite their lack of pop culture relevance. It’s a worthy representation of a scrappy underdog team that went out and beat the villainous Iceland squad in the Junior Goodwill Games.

All Star Movies dalmatians

All this to say, All Star Movies looked better than I expected. I prefer some sections of All Star Sports (like the mini football field) in terms of theme but this resort was more well rounded and avoided any dead space in terms ofdesign. I do see this as a slightly worse, but significantly cheaper, option to Art of Animation. It’s certainly older but everything looks pretty good outside.

Moving to the room, it looks the same as the other All Star Resorts because it is. That means it’s a smart use of a smaller floor plan, without many specific touches. ‘

All Star Movies both beds

The murphy bed has been a feature of Disney World value resort rooms as of late, and this is no different. I love this concept, but admittedly only have 2 people in these rooms almost all of the time I’m in them. Having that bed down does make space tight but it’s nice to be able to add to the walkaround area during waking hours. My biggest complaint is that they just use the same Mickey art over the bed at all of the value resorts. Just altering it slightly to be resort specific would go a long ways for me.

All Star Movies TV

Here’s the other side of the room. Yes, my last name is Long! Nice to meet you. This is fairly nondescript like most hotel rooms in this section. I do appreciate that the furniture is skinny, giving more room for walking and not bonking your knee on something when you get up for the bathroom at 4 AM.

All Star Movies bathroom

The sink room has a sliding door to separate it from the rest. It’s a nice touch if someone is getting ready early before others want to get up. The pea green is not a nice touch in my humble opinion but that’s personal preference so we’ll barrel along.

All Star Movies shower

Here’s the shower and toilet. It was nice enough with decent water pressure. Really just your average hotel bathroom but it was clean!

All Star Movies ducks headboard

Overall, the room is a good use of space with a few small Disney touches. The square footage matches the budget friendly aspect of the hotel but it’s definitely enough space for 2 people. 3 or 4 adults would get tight after a couple of days but you could make it work!

All Star Movies pool day

As for the amenities, the highlight is a Fantasia pool with a cool Sorcerer Mickey and a few fountains! There’s also a pool in the Mighty Ducks section called Duck Pond Pool. It looks like a hockey rink and is well done. The two combined probably make for the best pair of any All Star Resort, with my warmest regards to the Three Caballeros pool at All Star Music.

All Star Movies World Premier Food Court sign

There’s also the World Premiere Food Court and Silver Screen Spirits Bar. Both of them are akin to other value resort food courts and bars, meaning they aren’t great. We had a fairly bad meal at World Premiere Food Court (a review will be up eventually) but the theater design of it was cool.

All Star Movies lobby

Other amenities include the Reel Fun Arcade (get it?), a playground, paid laundry and, of course, a Disney gift shop. All of those are pretty standard offerings but nice to have. I do like the lobby here more than the other All Star Resorts and possibly more than any Value Resort. There’s some fun little movie touches throughout.

The other factor to consider is transportation. With all of the All Star Resorts, busses can be difficult. The best way I’ve found to get past this is going to the parks at off times. We stay in the parks until there’s no one left and don’t run into many bus issues at that point. But trying to catch one after fireworks can definitely be a frustrating experience. Transportation is definitely not an asset for the hotel but it’s not bad enough to make me not recommend it.

All Star Movies Love Bug Winners Circle

Getting back to what leads to booking All Star Movies Resort, this is easily my favorite of the All Star Resorts. Having said that, it is usually slightly more expensive than Sports or Music. And what I like more about the resort are the outside decorations and a few small amenity touches. To me, that’s worth $10 or $15 extra but probably not a lot more than that. Chances are that if you’re booking an All Star Resort then you might be looking for the cheapest option. If that’s not All Star Movies then the difference in quality is negligible. All things being equal though, I would go for Movies over the other two options.

A broader picture of the Walt Disney World hotels sees All Star Movies as a really nice budget option. We love Pop Century and that will definitely remain our top pick for value resorts. But if you’re wanting to save the $30-$50 difference between that and All Star Movies, then I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. All Star Movies isn’t going to confuse anyone for a luxurious experience but there’s plenty of value here and the decor makes for a fun stay.

Overall Rating – 7.5/10
