D23 Expo: Reimagined Test Track Opens in 2025

At the D23 Expo tonight, more details were revealed on the reimagined Test Track as well as news that it will open in 2025. In this post, we’ll share those details as well as add our own commentary and reaction. Let’s get to the news!

Buckle up for a brand-new experience when a reimagined Test Track presented by Chevrolet races into EPCOT in 2025.

Announced during Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Walt Disney Imagineering is collaborating with Chevrolet to push innovation forward and celebrate humanity’s enduring drive (pun intended) on the thrilling road to a brighter tomorrow. But, before we get too far down this winding road, Test Track will celebrate today’s innovation while highlighting the past, present, and future. The queue will feature six distinct exhibits, and within each room celebrate the vehicles – and people behind the vehicles – that push the envelope and help get people to our next chapter in our motion journey.

New show scenes will be added showcasing technological advances and how our lifestyles and relationships to mobility connect everyone. Enjoy a joy ride through scenes focusing on onboard technology, customization and personalization. Followed by a trip through a scenic outdoor route reminding us all of the joys of driving, taking in the world around us and spending quality time with friends and family.

Construction on this reimagined experience has already begun, and eagle-eyed visitors might already have picked up on the fact that the new exterior harkens back to the original pavilion design.

Commentary

The concept art remains mostly the same but we’ve gotten some new information to delve into here. A ride renovation at Test Track was sorely needed and I’m eager to see what they come up with. I don’t know if I’m confident in this remodel but do think it’s better they do this than don’t.

What I’m most confident in is the transformation of the queue. While Test Track 2.0 had a fun idea in building your own car, that did not age well. That’s generally the case with interactive technology in the parks. That specific Test Track idea was interesting but never felt fully realized, at least in how the car guests designed interacted with the ride.

Switching to a blend of history, modernity and future exhibits in the queue should be a win. I think that fits in with the current Epcot. I’ll be curious if any of those exhibits will be interactive or not – reminiscent of Journey of Water or Cosmic Rewind more. Either way, I think the queues and exhibits in the recent additions have been well done so I’m excited to see what they come up with here.

As for the ride, I’m cautiously optimistic. Test Track has the bones to be a really good attraction. In fact, it has been before! But it’s also tough to pull off with the integration and plot. I didn’t mind the actual ride in Test Track 2.0 but it could have been more. Maybe this new remodel will push it into being more unique and interesting!

It’s not a surprise that the attraction won’t reopen until 2025. As for when it will open, I would guess that they are shooting for the summer next year. Combining that with the new nighttime parade would make for an interesting summer, especially considering the lack of major attractions opening. Walt Disney World will add in a few other items to try and combat the opening of Epic Universe at Universal. Maybe a reimagined Test Track will help with that!
