The Snuggly Duckling is a Tangled themed counter-service restaurant in Tokyo DisneySea’s Fantasy Springs. The restaurant resides next to Rapunzel’s Lantern Festival, making up one of the mini-areas inside of the new port-of-call. As of opening, guests needed a mobile order (and a timed entry) to dine at The Snuggly Duckling but we expect that to change in the near future. The restaurant mainly serves sandwiches, fitting into the tavern theme from the movie it’s based on. In this post, we’ll review The Snuggly Duckling’s atmosphere, cuisine and value.
With the neighboring Tangled attraction recreating the most beautiful moment in the movie, adding in the only dining location (correct me if I’m wrong, Tangled aficionados) to the area was a no-brainer. With how playful the tavern is in the film, it was ripe for a theme park recreation. For those unfamiliar or that need a refresher, Rapunzel and Flynn stumble upon The Snuggly Duckling in the movie. They’re greeted by a group of seemingly tough and grizzled guys, who are ready to throw down. Rapunzel wins them over by singing about her dreams and they join in on the fun, eventually fitting the tavern’s cutesy name despite their appearance.
Imagineering had fun playing with that dichotomy, masculine tones and countless things shaped like kegs give way to bright murals and cute puppy photos. In one of the funnier sight gags, there’s a basket of skulls sitting next to a few painted unicorns. The details in the restaurant play on this contrast and it works wonderfully throughout all of the inside rooms.
Speaking of which, there are 3 indoor seating rooms after going to the ordering bay. Each of them have a special characteristic – the first has a piano for Hook Hand to practice away on, the second has a fireplace and a wonderful bear throne next to it and the final room seems to be painted by Rapunzel! There’s incredible details throughout and it’s hard to pick a favorite room, there’s no wrong choice here. Even the ordering bay looks great, with the cutlery and condiment station fitting in abnormally well.
It’s no surprise that The Snuggly Duckling nails the atmosphere and detailing. That is the standard in both Fantasy Springs and Tokyo Disney Resort as a whole. The only thing I could nitpick about the environment is that the outdoor seating is somewhat plain but even that fits into the rest of the land, being in the middle of Rapunzel’s Forest with trees nearby.
If this was a counter-service restaurant at Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World it would likely be the best themed one. At DisneySea, it’s in the conversation for that title but I’d probably choose Vulcania or the nearby Banquet Hall of Arendelle over this from an atmosphere perspective. Still, The Snuggly Duckling couldn’t look much better.
In terms of comparison, the places that come to mind are Gaston’s Tavern and Be Our Guest. Snuggly Duckling is larger than the former and smaller than the latter. This new restaurant has a strong capacity with it’s 4 seating areas and each room looking fantastic. If you, or someone in your family, is a Tangled fan then you won’t be disappointed in The Snuggly Duckling’s looks!
I’ve only stuck to the environment so far and there’s a reason for that, unfortunately. I got the positive out of the way. Tokyo Disney Resort, by and large, has really good food! They run into trouble, at least to this American’s palate, when they give burgers a try. That trend continues at The Snuggly Duckling. Here’s a look at the menu, you may need a translation tool to view it in English.
We’ll start with the better of the two entrée options we tried. This is the Fried Shrimp Burger consisting of fried shrimp, tartar sauce (maybe with an additional flavor), and a cabbage slaw on top of a bun. Unlike the burgers, Tokyo Disney does seafood exceptionally well. I was worried the shrimp would be rubbery and without flavor but this was tender and the batter added a nice crisp without much grease. I won’t say this is an amazing dish but it is dependable. If you like seafood then you’ll probably like this. At 950 yen (just over $6 USD as of June 2024) for the sandwich, the value is incredible just like most of the food in the resort and Japan.
This, my friends, is the Duckling Dream Cheeseburger. The good news is that it tasted better than it looked. I thought the burger itself was better than most I’ve had at TDR, although still somewhat bland. I’m fine with different, even weird, toppings on burgers but the ham was not for me, dawg. I liked the sauce pretty well, tasting like a mix of tartar and thousand island dressing. Maybe I just liked the sauce because it masked the ham taste? Either way, this isn’t that bad. There’s just so many better options at DisneySea that I would never get it again. This is 900 yen which would be a good value if the burger was better.
We tried both desserts, starting with this cute Sweets Ever After (Lemon & Strawberry). I feel like something may be lost in translation in that title but that just could be the practical side of my brain talking. The bread that the fruit, jam and cream is served on is fluffy and moderately sweet. As for the toppings, they were good but nothing more. For as Instagrammable as this is, I didn’t think it was anything more than above-average.
I liked this Duckling Muffin more but that’s likely because of my affection for caramel. The cupcake had a nice cream on top and was filled with dulce de leche. For as much as I enjoyed the dessert, there was nothing special about it. It came in at 600 yen ($3.85ish USD) while the frying pan option was 700 ($4.50). Those are cheap desserts, even if they aren’t amazing!
For as fantastic as the atmosphere is, The Snuggly Duckling’s food lets the restaurant down. This could be a palate thing, as I just do not like TDR’s cheeseburgers. Maybe others will have more luck. Even if I give that a pass, the food feels uninspired.
As a result, The Snuggly Duckling ends up being a mixed bag. It’s worth seeing if you’re a Tangled fan, and it’s hard to be too down on the food when it’s as cheap as it is. But I’d recommend ordering a drink or sharing one of the desserts there and enjoying the different rooms offered. Getting the Shrimp Burger isn’t a bad way to go either. That a place that nails the theme so perfectly couldn’t come through with better food is a shame but The Snuggly Duckling is still worth a look!
