For years, Attraction Ranking posts have been a hallmark of this site. Those posts combine two of my passions: ranking things and theme park attractions. Another passion I have, that’s in the broader theme park category, are waterslides. I’m not a big giggler but you get me on a waterslide and I’m a cross between an excited Ron Swanson and a hyena. The good news for this website, specifically for me, is that Disney World has two water parks. In this post, I’ll rank the water slides at Blizzard Beach.
As with any attraction/water slide ranking post on this website, there’s more to Blizzard Beach than just attractions. Both of Walt Disney World’s water parks are slightly dated but a vestige to true theme. They have a story and don’t really break from it, franchise tie-ins be damned. Blizzard Beach is a ski resort where all of the snow has melted and turned it into a water park. It’s a pretty genius idea really. Go explore, enjoy the puns and be sure to pay your respects to Ice Gator, the park’s mascot. Of course, the attractions are the lifeblood of the park and fit in well with the theme.
For the rule followers out there, Blizzard Beach does have some attractions that aren’t water slides. The chair lift is a great feature, even if it’s inefficient. Cross Country Creek is a lazy river and who doesn’t love a lazy river? Melt-Away Bay is a fine wave pool but Typhoon Lagoon’s is way better. There’s also a large kids area, known as Ski Patrol Training Camp and Tike’s Peak, with a few small slides, some water obstacle courses and more. I won’t be ranking those because I did not want to be the childless adult racing a 4 year old down a water slide. Does that make me a hero? That’s for you to decide.
That leaves 7 attractions to rank but one of those is Runoff Rapids which is a group of 3 slides. Both of the open slides are largely the same but the tube slide is way different. In other words, I’m ranking 8 slides! I’m judging based on thrill, length, speed and any other qualifications I think of. Basically, I’m just going to rank what I thought was the best in first place, what was worst in last place and fill in the middle. Incredible insight, I know. Let’s get to the rankings!
8. Downhill Double Dipper
Just because you finish last doesn’t mean that I didn’t laugh all the way down, Downhill Double Dipper! This is a tube ride with a very practical name. Riders basically go straight down the tube, racing the person on the slide next to them. There’s not much to it and the ride is over in less than 10 seconds. I like the ski racing theme and enjoyed the ride, it’s just too short and doesn’t measure up to the generally long line.
7. Toboggan Racers
The racing slides being at the bottom is mostly coincidence, I really enjoy them. I should say that there isn’t really a disappointing waterslide out of this bunch and that spots 4-8 are pretty interchangeable. Toboggan Racers is great for a group, as there are 8 lanes across for people to race down the slides. Guests are given mats and go down on their stomachs. It’s a fun waterslide but gets knocked down due to a shorter length without any extra thrill.
6. Runoff Rapids – Open Air
This is a classic waterslide, similar to what you’d find in an old water park. Guests do go down on an innertube, with a few nice twists and small drops to keep the speed up. This is on the backside of Mt. Gushmore (where most of the waterslides reside) and is a nice bridge to younger kids who might be a little scared of the faster paced slides in the park.
5. Snow Stormers
Snow Stormers is the neighbor to Toboggan Racers but is a little more fun. Instead of straight downhill, the slide acts like a slalom ski race. This is another really well executed idea and makes for a good ride. Guests lay stomach down on a mat to go and the ride has some speed but not enough to scare anyone away.
4. Teamboat Springs
The big family raft ride at Blizzard Beach is Teamboat Springs. Group water park rides are always good fun and this is no exception. There’s not a huge thrill here. The biggest is when the giant tube goes up the walls on turns. But the speed is lower and there’s nothing particularly surprising about the ride. This is just good ol’ fashioned fun!
3. Summit Plummet
Out of respect to Blizzard Beach’s iconic attraction, I had to put this in the top 3. And without a doubt, it’s the biggest thrill in the park as riders basically drop 120 feet. This is the third tallest and fastest free fall slide in the world! Among Disney World’s thrill rides, Melissa thinks this is the scariest and I would put it in the top 4 or 5. I think it’s a blast! That said, it does hurt a little bit and is over in however long it takes to drop 12 stories (not long). Summit Plummet is expertly themed to a ski jump area, but guests go under the park icon jump, into a tube, before coming out near the bottom of the drop. It’s a must do but isn’t for the faint of heart!
2. Runoff Rapids – Tube
The most underrated of thrills at Blizzard Beach is the tube slide at Runoff Rapids. It doesn’t draw the crowds that most other slides do but it moves quickly and is so much fun. I would guess that enclosed slides generally make people feel as if they’re going faster than they are? That certainly feels true here. Whatever the case, this is the longest thrill slide in the park and produced the most unashamed giggling of all the slides in Blizzard Beach.
1. Slush Gusher
Slush Gusher is Summit Plummet’s younger but more enjoyable cousin. This slide is still a thrill, dropping several times and getting up to high speeds. Unlike the rush of Summit Plummet though, you’re actually aware of what is happening on Slush Gusher. The ride is a little bit longer while still producing the same amount of excitement. Bonus points if you get a little bit of air on the last drop!
