Park Itineraries

The Ideal Tokyo Disneyland Morning

Tokyo Disneyland is my favorite castle park. Tokyo Disneyland is also extremely busy. Time is always at a premium when visiting the Japanese resort and being efficient in the morning can go a long ways in making the rest of the day more enjoyable. That’s doesn’t mean that you need to turn into Usain Bolt and try to break any track records getting from place to place. There’s a balance to be struck! In this post, we’ll share what our ideal morning at Tokyo Disneyland is.

Before we get to the actual plan, there are some terms to know. I’ll explain how we’re using these more below but, for now, just memorize these terms for the upcoming midterm. Our morning includes 1 Disney Premier Access which is a paid FastPass/Lightning Lane. We’ll also use a version of free FastPass/Lightning Lane called 40th Anniversary Priority Pass. You might ask, “Oh, is it Tokyo Disney’s 40th anniversary?” Great question, young padawan. No, the 40th anniversary was about 3 years ago on April 15th, 2023. Insert the SNL “Nobody knows” gif/meme/video. Let’s not question a free FastPass though!

With the terms out of the way, let’s address the other big question that comes with Tokyo Disney Resort – The rope drop crowds. I won’t beat around the bush, there will be a lot of people waiting to get into the park at 9 AM (the typical opening time). If you’re staying at one of the Tokyo Disney hotels and have the ‘Happy Entry’ that grants guests an extra 15 minutes to get into the park in the morning then great. Show up about half hour before the park gates open and use it!

For the sake of this post, we’ll assume that you don’t have the Happy Entry. Either way, this isn’t going to make or break your morning. It’s just a convenience. Don’t let the large mass of humanity discourage you in the morning, the lines move fast at the turnstiles and you’ll be able to stick to the plan. If you don’t have the early entry then try to get to the park about 45 minutes before Tokyo Disneyland opens.

One other item to note is that Tokyo Disney Resort has just added a single rider line at Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast! This is great news for solo and adult travelers or for those with older kids who don’t mind being split up. If this is you, you can skip the Disney Premier Access step and just go do this attraction at some point in the morning. Like the other caveats, we’ll just assume you aren’t doing that and will be riding with a group.

To underline the point of this post, I want to say that this is our ideal morning at Tokyo Disneyland. The 1-Day Itinerary, which will be receiving an update soon, is more focused on getting things done. This post shows how to have an efficient morning while diverging from the common crowd strategy. Let’s get to it!

Get Those Phones Ready!

You’re at the gates and the lines are moving. Good job! Waking up can be hard sometimes. You’ll need your phones ready to get into the park anyway. Once you’ve entered, keep them out and get a Disney Premier Access Pass for Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast. Aim to get this for the late morning – 10:30 or 11. Unless it’s a particularly busy day, that shouldn’t be much of an issue. If times are later than that, no worries, just grab the earliest one.

While in the app, grab a Priority Pass for Pooh’s Hunny Hunt. Better yet, have one person in your group get the Premier Access Pass and the other person get the Priority Access. With Hunny Hunt, you’ll get the earliest time possible. This will likely end up being earlier than Beauty and the Beast, which works well with our plan. We count on it being in the 2nd or 3rd hours of park opening (somewhere in the 10-11:30 range) and you’ll have an hour window to get there. Again, if it falls outside of that range then don’t worry. Fit the excellent ride in where it falls.

Rope Drop Splash Mountain

All of this phone time is paired with a quick walk to Splash Mountain. I’m fully aware that ‘our ideal morning’ includes going on the wettest ride in the park before anything else. This is especially dicey in the winter months. But I stand by this being the best time to go on the attraction, long lines form throughout the day because this remains one of the best attractions in the park. If this doesn’t appeal to you then just skip this step but if it does then you’ll likely walk right onto the ride.

The walk to Splash from the park entrance is fairly simple, you just head toward Westernland, with the castle on your right hand side. Have your ponchos ready to go and enjoy the well maintained ride. Cast Members will be very happy to let you know that this is now the only version of Splash Mountain.

The Adventureland Lineup!

Following Splash Mountain, we’ll make a run through Adventureland’s highlights. That starts with Pirates of the Caribbean, a beautiful version of the attraction that is most similar to California’s. Assuming that Splash’s wait was very minimal then you should get to this ride within the first half hour of the park being open. If that’s the case then you won’t encounter much of a wait.

Maybe I should have titled this post ‘Our Ideal, Boat Filled, Tokyo Disneyland Morning’ because after Pirates we’ll continue to Jungle Cruise. Yes, all of the rides so far are retreads of existing (or previously existing, in Splash Mountain’s case) stateside attractions but they all offer something unique. That’s especially true of Jungle Cruise, where the skippers will be very animated and there’s a few exciting scenes that will look different.

With 3 boats out of the way, it’s time to hop on the Western River Railroad. This step is largely dependent on if you have time before the Pooh’s Hunny Hunt Priority Pass. If you do, then we highly recommend the train. It’s a leisurely way to continue the morning after rushing around through a few attractions. It also offers a nice view of the park that is quite unique.

Sweethearts Cafe

We’ve made it through 4 attractions and it’s time to fuel up before finishing off a productive morning. My preference here is Sweethearts Cafe, as they’ll have some coffee along with a strong assortment of pastries. Now, the coffee isn’t great but it is coffee! Their pastry game is strong and if it’s a hot morning then this is one of the few places where you can get the coffee iced.

Melissa might audible from my plan here and just go with some popcorn, likely caramel. I’d throw the chocolate popcorn in as a suggestion. If you’re looking for something a little more filling then La Taverne de Gaston is a solid choice, although your mileage may vary on the food. One way or another, grab a snack before we sit down for a proper lunch.

Use Those Passes

At this point, the Priority and Premier Access Passes should be available to use. Their window might have already come before this step. Use them, no matter what. Once you’re done with Pooh’s Hunny Hunt, grab another Priority Pass. Our preference is Monsters Inc. Ride & Go Seek as it’s unique to the park. Big Thunder Mountain is never a bad choice though.

One other thing to keep in mind with this step – the Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast pass will still take up some time. The preshow is fairly long, and then there’s another small queue before the actual ride. It’s a nearly half hour experience even if you aren’t waiting much. Plan accordingly.

Fill in the Gaps

We’re nearing the end of our morning at this point. I wouldn’t call this relaxing but it is the easiest way to avoid long lines in the morning while still having a few more leisurely attractions. Perhaps there was some extra time along the way and, if there was, then we recommend filling it with Fantasyland rides. Or maybe a second coffee.

The hope is that this morning itinerary gets 5 of the biggest Tokyo Disneyland rides out of the way without waiting more than 20 minutes for any of them. That will free up the rest of the day for parades, a few other top notch attractions, whatever replicas you want to ride and exploring. The crowd cycles at Tokyo Disneyland are important to get out in front of and this plan should do the trick. The other ideal and acceptable morning at the park would just be seeing the Country Bears 10 times in a row.
