Downtown Disney Parkside Market: GG’s Chicken Shop Review

GG’s Chicken Shop is a counter-service restaurant in Disneyland Resort’s Downtown Disney. One of several options in the new Parkside Market, the restaurant features chicken sandwiches and salads as well as several sides and desserts. A Magic Key discount is offered to diners. In this post, we’ll review GG’s Chicken Shop including our thoughts on the food, atmosphere and value.

DTD Parkside Market GG's Chicken Shop ordering (1 of 1)

Parkside Market at Downtown Disney opened in January of 2025 and includes several tenants including two quick-service restaurants – GG’s Chicken Shop and Seoul Sister. Along with that there’s a coffee shop (Sip & Sonder) and a full bar in the upstairs seating portion. Think of it like a mini food hall! There’s seating downstairs where guests can claim a table after seating. Moving upstairs next to the bar, there’s two patios to sit at as well as more indoor seating. Upstairs includes full service, where the food from any of the four food & drink options will be brought to you after ordering with a waiter.

The flexibility of the space is a good idea, even if it didn’t seem fully fleshed out upon opening. There are areas to work outside upstairs, which Downtown Disney desperately needed given the local nature of the parks. The upstairs seating is especially inviting, with pops of color. The vibe is very similar to Disneyland Hotel’s Palm Breeze Bar, with decor reminiscent of Palm Springs in the 60’s or 70’s. As someone who doesn’t really like the uniformity of the Downtown Disney remodel, Parkside Market is a nice splash of color and interesting architecture.

Downstairs feels far more food court-ish than upstairs which, again, is by design. The restaurants have ordering counters along the wall while the seating is inside of that. Even with that said, there’s some nice pops of color and more comfortable seating than your brain might conjure up when I used the food court phrase. The seating area is relatively small with a polished white finish. There are windows all around to let in some natural light and plenty of places to sit on the grass turf, right outside.

Moving upstairs, I found the space to be very comfortable. I especially liked the bar, which was in the round (I resisted the urge to go with a pun-filled ‘in the square’ but then I felt the need to tell you I resisted the urge… So maybe I didn’t resist after all). It had that sleek but slightly old-fashioned style.

Some large booths sit along one wall upstairs. They appear to big enough for around 8 people. A myriad of other tables fill out the indoor space upstairs. I did prefer the upstairs area to the downstairs and it seems as if people are free to sit there even without being waited on. That could change over time though.

There were two patios, one that looked more like a nice spot for working and one with more of a traditional chairs and tables setup. Both look like great spots to enjoy a nice 70 degree evening at! Downtown Disney is really short on hangout spots and this moves to the top of the list immediately.

Again, the four tenants share this space so our review for Seoul Sister will be very similar to our review of GG’s when it comes to atmosphere. That’s not a bad thing, as I like what they’ve done with Parkside Market and think it’s a strong addition to the entertainment district, even before considering the food.

Speaking of the food though, GG’s Chicken Shop hails from Chicago and this is the first one on the west coast. Even in Chicago the quick-service restaurant is relatively new, opening in 2023. GG’s was created by Chef Lee Wolen, who has earned a Michelin Star through his Chicago-based restaurant Boka, alongside James Beard Award-winning restaurateurs Rob Katz and Kevin Boehm.

Here’s a look at the restaurant’s menu, which conveniently leaves off prices! If you care to zoom in I have the poor photo of the menu with the prices above. That photo actually lists GG’s, Seoul Sister and Sip & Sonder, for those interested.

DTD Parkside Market GG's Chicken Shop sandwich (1 of 1)

This is the Original Fried Chicken Sandwich ($18). Along with the chicken this consisted of Bread and Butter Pickles, Cabbage, Spicy Mayo, and Hot Honey on a Brioche Bun. I’m happy to say that the chicken at GG’s Chicken Shop is excellent. You would hope that’d be the case for any place with the word chicken in the name, but we all know it doesn’t always go that way. This chicken patty tasted fresh, with a good amount of juicy meat. The breading on top didn’t get overly greasy and had the right amount of seasoning. Along with a great patty, the Spicy Mayo and Hot Honey made for a sweet and savory treat. Fair warning, here is a good amount of spice on this sandwich! But it all worked really well for me and elevated this as one of the better chicken sandwiches we’ve had.

DTD Parkside Market GG's Chicken Shop Grilled Chicken Sandwich (1 of 1)

The Grilled Chicken Sandwich (also $18) is a slightly healthier option but still delicious! The Grilled Chicken came with Pickled red Onion, Arugula, Tomato, Roasted Garlic Aioli and Ciabatta Bun. Again, the chicken itself was cooked really well. The Aïoli and Arugula were the other stars of the show, making for a not as heavy option. I preferred the Original Fried Chicken Sandwich but by a slim margin.

DTD Parkside Market GG's Chicken Shop Waffle Fries (1 of 1)

The sandwiches don’t come with Waffle Fries ($8) but we did order some. I thought these were good with a nice seasoning, but there ended up being too much of that seasoning on them. After a while the salty taste overpowered everything. Along with the extra dose of sodium, I thought that paying $8 for a side of fries was excessive without them being exceptional.

DTD Parkside Market GG's Chicken Shop Brocolli Slaw (1 of 1)

The other side we tried was the Broccoli Slaw ($7), which I liked more than the fries. This includes Almonds, Raisins, Dill, Lemon Poppy Seed Dressing along with the Broccoli. Initially, we were both unsure of the texture but after a couple of bites this really grew on us. The sweetness of the ingredients matched with the Broccoli made for a delicious mix. This too was a little overpriced considering the portion size but it was more original.

In the end, I thought the food at GG’s Chicken Shop was delicious but not a great value. Upping the cost of the sandwich by a couple of dollars and including a side would have been a more palatable move. Even with that nitpick, I thought the sandwiches were both delicious and ones that I’ll come back to. The quality of ingredients is apparent. Pair that with the casual atmosphere of Parkside Market and you have a winning combo!

Overall Rating – 8.5/10
