Tick Tock Diner is a counter-service restaurant in Tokyo Disney Resort’s Ambassador Hotel. Unlike many of the Disney hotel restaurants there, this restaurant is open to the public and not just those staying in the hotel. Tick Tock Diner is a small space (21 seats) that serves sandwiches and drinks. In this post, we’ll review the restaurant’s atmosphere, cuisine and value as well as share our thoughts on whether this place is worth visiting or not.
It’s no secret that we love Tokyo Disney Resort! In fact, we love it so much that we have trouble spending time exploring the different hotels and other areas instead of just the two incredible parks. No matter how wonderful the hotels, Ikspiari (Tokyo’s Downtown Disney section) and restaurants are, there’s only so much time to enjoy it all. That’s not even factoring in that one of the most amazing cities in the world, Tokyo, is a short train ride away as well as the rest of Japan. So figuring out if a counter-service restaurant like Tick Tock Diner is worth going to is tricky!
The good news is that Tick Tock Diner is a convenient stop for a travel day, whether you’re arriving at TDR the evening before your park days start or aren’t leaving until the afternoon after your stay is done. Resort Gateway Station is the monorail stop closest to the JR Maihama Station, which most everyone will use to get to Tokyo Disney Resort. Disney Ambassador Hotel, and Tick Tock Diner, is right by the Resort Gateway Station.
Finding the restaurant within the Ambassador Hotel is fairly easy, at least compared to whatever that map above is trying to show. Most everyone dining here will be coming through Ikspiari to arrive and Tick Tock Diner is on the first floor of the hotel, just outside of the far exit/entrance (from the stations) of the entertainment and dining district.
Whether Tick Tock Diner is worthy of making that stop is the question, as it’s not any different than eating in Ikspiari in terms of distance. That question will come down to what you’re in the mood for! There are a couple of places in Ikspiari that we really like but that serve entirely different food than this counter-service stop. Let’s take a look at Tick Tock Diner’s attributes, starting with the atmosphere.
As I mentioned, the restaurant is quite small! There were 3 tables of 4 and a counter that sat 9. That’s not much room but, thankfully, Tick Tock Diner was not busy at all when we got there. In fact, we had the place to ourselves for quite a while. It’s likely due to that popularity that the hours here are only noon to 6 or 7 PM.
Inside of the restaurant there are bright blue and green chairs and a large clock on the far wall, hence the name. Inspiration was taken from the classic 1950’s American diner, although this looks far cleaner and shinier than those. Despite the size, there’s plenty to look at in here and it’s a fun vibe. I wouldn’t say the theme is transporting or anything but it’s a cozy spot to have a meal.
One of the best aspects of the atmosphere is the open kitchen to watch the Cast Members craft the sandwiches. Before you picture Subway and the ‘sandwich artists’ this is far more intricate. You also just order at the cash register and can watch if you so choose, this isn’t a ‘build it as you go’ situation. I’d say that I mean no offense to Subway but, well, I don’t mind offending that chain.
Moving onto the food, here’s a look at the menu. Like most of Tokyo Disney Resort’s restaurants, the options are limited and specialize in one thing. In this case, that is sandwiches! Although, they’re unlike sandwiches we might find in America. I mentioned sandwich artists in jest but these are as close to art as sandwiches can get.
This is the Egg, Tuna and Mortadella Sandwich on Mickey Bread! The bread was sweet, similar to a Japanese Milk Bread. That paired well with all of the savory items on the sandwich. Japan is no stranger to incredible egg salad sandwiches and this played especially well. Honestly, just the egg salad on top of the bread would have been fine with me. The tuna wrapped inside of the mortadella looks more well crafted than any sandwich should. It’s also odd to my western palate. But in all, this tasted really good! At 1,300 yen (roughly $9 USD as of August 2024) this is a filling and interesting sandwich that I would happily get again.
We also ordered the Avocado, Shrimp and Smoked Salmon Bagel. Served with lettuce, onion and mayo, this is quite a creation! As usual, the seafood was very fresh and delicious. It’s an ambitious take on a bagel and lox but the sandwich succeeded for both of us. The salmon was the star of the show but all of the ingredients worked surprisingly well together. I preferred the first option while Melissa preferred this one. At 1,600 yen ($11 USD), this is still a decent bang for the buck considering all of the ingredients.
Like I mentioned, these sandwiches might be a little bit out there if you’re used to your usual turkey & swiss. That said, I found them really tasty and expertly put together. There was more time put in making these sandwiches than most counter-service restaurants put in on any food. My compliments to the artists!
Even after thoroughly enjoying the meal and atmosphere, it’s hard to find where Tick Tock Diner fits into a Tokyo Disney Resort trip. If you’re feeling especially sandwich-y during one of your travel days then I’d recommend it. But just in Ikspiari alone there’s delicious ramen and pork tonkatsu! The parks are filled with excellent choices and Tokyo is one of the best food cities in the entire world. It’s not as if Tick Tock Diner doesn’t deserve praise, it was really good – the type of place I wish existed more in the stateside parks. There’s just not much time to enjoy the restaurant despite it being a delicious, quick option.
Overall Rating – 8.5/10
