Tokyo Disneyland’s La Taverne de Gaston Review

La Taverne de Gaston is a counter-service restaurant in Tokyo Disneyland. Opening alongside Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast in 2020, the restaurant resides in a cute, little French-themed village just outside of the attraction. The menu is fairly simple but delicious and the décor is based around the hunkiest villain around, Gaston. In this post, we’ll review the restaurant’s cuisine, atmosphere and value.

When Gaston’s Tavern debuted in Walt Disney World in 2012, Imagineering seemed as if they were on the verge of something. Yes, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Be Our Guest, the larger Beauty and the Beast restaurant, were the stars of that New Fantasyland expansion. But Gaston’s Tavern had a great vibe and was a fun thematic idea. The menu was, and still is, a little small but there was nothing else quite like it in Magic Kingdom, even if that version of the restaurant wasn’t fully fleshed out.

Once Tokyo Disneyland announced their Beauty and the Beast expansion, evolving on the original iteration was inevitable. A larger seating area, variations on the menu and some masculine décor were necessary along with a French name. La Taverne de Gaston turned a fun little idea into a great counter-service restaurant.

The village square, or maybe circle in this case, that La Taverne de Gaston is a part of is both pretty and unassuming. If you catch the right angle, the castle in the distance does seem like a foreboding figure casting a shadow over the area. More, there’s just some pretty buildings that could fit in the French countryside. There’s a touch of Bavarian style to the tavern, as well. It’s a gorgeous area, especially right at closing when the crowds clear out.

Once inside La Taverne de Gaston, there’s an ordering bay like most counter-service spots have. Naturally, Gaston has gathered some antlers as trophies for the area but most of the decorations are saved for the seating areas. After ordering, there are three different areas to choose for seating.

We’ll start with the outdoor section as it’s a little bit of a hidden gem. On one hand, sitting out here means you’ll miss out on most of the funny Gaston gags. There’s no dart board or hunting gear out there. But it is quieter and tucked away from the crowds. Sitting here could lead to some wonderful people watching or maybe you just want a glass of mulled wine in a less busy atmosphere. Either way, I don’t think sitting outside is a bad option.

Inside is where the fun resides, regardless of the room you choose to dine in. Some of it will look familiar if you’ve been to Gaston’s Tavern in Magic Kingdom. The portrait and giant throne next to it are very similar. But the restaurant is much bigger so there’s a few more fun touches, including lots of miniature deer coming out of the walls and wild chandeliers.

My favorite of the rooms has a target for the bow and arrows. Gaston has shown off his skills here as there are arrows all over the place but none on the actual target. Really, there’s not a bad choice in places to sit and there’s some visual jokes throughout. Tokyo Disney Resort is no stranger to masculine tones in these spaces as Teddy Roosevelt Lounge in DisneySea is expertly done. La Taverne de Gaston has a great atmosphere because of that style and all of the prop jokes.

Moving on to the food, here’s a look at the menu where you may need to use a translation tool! It’s not an overly elaborate menu, there are three main items on it that are each priced at 780 yen which amounts to just over $5 USD as of early March 2024.

In the name of research, we tried all three. Above is the Hunter’s Pie, filled with Beef Stew. This is my favorite of the bunch as the pastry dough is flaky and the stew hearty. There’s a generous portion of beef in this considering the size of the pastry. Having this as a smaller meal or a bigger snack is a good way to go.

Here’s the French Toast Sandwich, which was also very good. There’s melted cheese in between pieces of this sweet and toasted bread. It’s a nice mix of sweet and savory but does get on the rich side if you aren’t sharing. I’d happily get this one again though. I wish it had an egg on it, if not 5 dozen of them to make Gaston proud.

La Taverne de Gaston croissant

Finally, here’s what Google Translate and the Tokyo Disney website combine to call the Big Bite Croissant. What this photo doesn’t adequately show you is that there’s a bone-in sausage in the middle of the pastry. Really it’s kind of like a hot dog inside of a croissant with a bone sticking out. All of the items I just listed taste like decent versions of what they are (I didn’t taste the bone) but this is probably more divisive than the other options. I thought it was fine. But if you’ve always wanted to eat a hot dog inside of a croissant and have a bone left over then, boy, do I have a place for you!

That menu is served all day. There’s a few sides, desserts and drinks offered but that’s the entrée portion. I wouldn’t mind seeing one more option added as I think the food is decent but could be a little more exciting. That said, Gaston is a simple man. I’m also not sure if he can read, much less follow a cookbook. That assumes that he’s the one running the tavern which, now that I think about it, is probably not happening.

La Taverne de Gaston is a blast! Between the goofy décor and comfortable seating, the atmosphere is the star of the show, being an enhanced and much larger version of what Disney World offers. On top of that, the food is pretty good and offers a great value! This is a perfect spot to stop for breakfast or a hearty snack.
