2022 D23 Expo Announcement: Magic Happens Returning, Nighttime Spectaculars Debuting at Disneyland Resort in 2023

2 new shows and a returning parade are coming to Disneyland! “Wondrous Journeys” at Disneyland park will feature nods to all 60 Walt Disney Animation Studios films to date, taking viewers on a journey filled with artistry, music, storytelling and heart. The show will feature a new song called “It’s Wondrous.”

Special entertainment moments will also pop up across the resort for the company’s 100th anniversary, including the long-awaited return of the “Magic Happens” parade in spring.

“World of Color – One” at Disney California Adventure will span the broad storytelling legacy of Disney’s first 100 years and tell a new story through Disney classics and new favorites.

Commentary

In my eyes, this was the best news that came out of the D23 Expo. We can debate if that was a high bar or not but introducing two nighttime spectaculars at Disneyland Resort and finally bringing back a lovely parade isn’t chump change.

Magic Happens debuted in 2020 just weeks before the COVID shutdown. Ever since reopening, the parade has been in missing in action. Maybe some of that was due to the Main Street Electrical Parade making yet another run down Main Street or maybe there were other reasons. Whatever it is, I’m ecstatic to hear the news of the parade returning and look forward to being there as soon as it rolls through Disneyland.

As for the nighttime spectaculars, I think World of Color is due for an overhaul. While it’s a quality show, the original version has run for many years with only a few tweaks. Of course, there’s some worry since a few other versions of World of Color haven’t been as successful as the original. But I’m eager to see what they come up with! If it’s bad, we’ll have the original back in a year 😉

Finally, Disneyland could use a new firework show. I don’t think I love Disneyland Forever as much as others and Mickey’s Mix Magic should never be played again. Remember… Dreams Come True remains unbeaten but also hasn’t seen the light of day (night in this case?) in years. That clears a path for a new show. A few details were revealed, including that Wondrous Journeys will showcase all 60 animated films in some fashion. That seems like a tall task!

To close out the Parks presentation, they also debuted the song for the fireworks show called Wondrous. It was a little more folk music-y than others but still used the common Disney buzz words. I’ll be curious to what it will sound like in the show and I thought the live performance sounded good, although it didn’t measure up to Happily Ever After. All in all, color me intrigued!
