California Theme Park Reopening Dates & Information

It’s April now which means California Theme Parks finally have the go ahead to reopen! Throughout the state there are still certain restrictions that will apply to theme parks as they reopen. The major theme parks also have different dates for which they are opening. In this post, we’ll cover when all of the Californian theme parks are reopening and some general information on what you can expect if you’re visiting these parks in the near future.

Like everything has been for the last year now, all of these dates and information is fluid. With the hopes that the country has turned the corner in this pandemic, everything should move forward without too many kinks or hold ups. If things change we will update this post with any new information. Let’s get to the park reopening dates!

Along with this, the Grand Californian Hotel will open on April 29th and the DVC rooms will open a few days later on May 2nd. The other Disney owned hotels will open at a later date but there are many options throughout the Anaheim area to stay.

Universal Studios Hollywood – Now Open

Universal Studios Hollywood opened on April 16th to all visitors.

Six Flags Magic Mountain – Now Open

Magic Mountain reopened on April 1st.

Legoland California – Now Open

Legoland opened to the general public on April 15th.

Knott’s Berry Farm – May 21st

Knott’s is in the midst of a food festival, Taste of Boysenberry, which runs until May 2nd. After that the park will open to Passholders on May 6th and to the general public on May 21st.

SeaWorld – Now Open

I was way off in my guess on this one as SeaWorld is now open and running attractions. The park opened on April 12th.

General Information

While the reopening dates on these parks all differ, the restrictions by which they abide by will not. Each county in California is in a specific tier when it comes to reopening and those tiers will be used to determine capacity and dining restrictions. Along with that, California theme parks will start by only allowing in-state visitors. We expect that to change in the next month or two. Lastly, many of the theme parks will be having guests make reservations in advance and there will be some days that sell out. This is especially true for Disneyland.

From an attractions and shows perspective, all of these parks will be very ride heavy to start the reopening process. While there may be some walk around characters and other atmospheric (and socially distant) entertainment, big stage shows, nighttime spectaculars and parades will not be open with the parks. I do expect most rides to be open at all of these places, although California Adventure will be holding off on Avengers Campus for a while longer. The amount of dining offered will differ from park to park. Don’t expect every dining location to be open at Disneyland Resort in the first couple of months.

  • A “group” cannot be larger than 10 people or from more than three households
  • No indoor dining

Orange Tier:

  • Capacity limited to 25%
  • Indoor dining allowed but limited to 25% capacity also

Yellow Tier:

  • Park capacity limited to 35% and indoor capacity limited to 25%
