Spyglass Grill Breakfast Review

Spyglass Grill is a Walt Disney World counter-service restaurant in Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort. The restaurant is all open air and sits in the resort’s Trinidad section next to the pool. Spyglass Grill serves American fare with a few twists. Spyglass Grill does take part in the Disney Dining Plan as a quick-service credit although it is not a good use of a credit. In this post I’ll review Spyglass Grill, including my thoughts on the restaurant’s food, value and atmosphere.

A few years ago, Spyglass Grill would have been sitting in a portion of Caribbean Beach that was generally irrelevant. The sprawling resort is nice and all, but the Trinidad section didn’t offer much unique from the rest of the resort. Now that section sits across the water from the recently opened Disney Skyliner, making it an enviable place to stay.

Not only does the Skyliner revitalize Trinidad (and Caribbean Beach Resort in general) but it also makes Spyglass Grill an easy place to stop and have a meal on the way to Hollywood Studios or Epcot. Of course, this is mostly true for those that are staying at a Skyliner Resort but it’s an easy place to get to from those parks, as well. But is the counter-service restaurant worthy of a special trip for breakfast? Surprisingly yes, Spyglass Grill has entered hidden gem territory at WDW.

Spyglass Grill and Skyliner

Sitting adjacent to Trinidad’s pool, Spyglass Grill has a small seating area that’s covered. There’s also a drink station and a few other amenities for guests to use. Spyglass Grill has a small counter to order at and has fans overhead to try to increase the air flow. If it’s blazing hot then eating here may not be a great choice but otherwise I think it stays relatively cool.

While there isn’t much of an atmosphere to the restaurant, sitting at Spyglass is a relaxing way to spend a meal. The views of the water and Skyliner are better than most counter-service restaurant atmospheres. On top of that, the solitude is something that you can’t often find at Disney World.

Skyliner across water Caribbean Beach

Finding the restaurant can be a little difficult if you’re not familiar with Caribbean Beach. If you’re coming from the Skyliner, it is directly across the water from the Caribbean Beach Station. Do not swim because of alligators and such. Instead, walk down the path from the station and cross the bridge before immediately turning right into the Trinidad. From there just follow the path by the water until you see Spyglass Grill.

Moving on to the food, we went to the restaurant for breakfast. The lunch and dinner menu are also ambitious and worth checking out. Here’s a look at the breakfast menu. It’s far more ambitious than nearly any counter-service breakfast menu at Disney World, combining some classics with inventive dishes.

Spyglass Grill breakfast bowl

I went with the Breakfast Yuca Hash which consists of Roasted Yuca with Chorizo Redeye Gravy and a Sunny-Side Up Egg topped with Pico de Gallo, Cotjia Cheese and a Lime. It’s a savory breakfast without being the usual WDW platter and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors complimented each other. It was filling without being overly heavy. The egg, Pico and Chorizo Gravy were all excellent together. This was the best counter-service breakfast item I’ve had at Disney World and frankly it’s not really close.

The Breakfast Yuca Hash is $9.49, making it an absolute bargain. Usually quality dishes at Disney World are a few dollars more than what they would be out in the real world. This one is actually cheaper than what it should be, as this is better than most things I’ve tried at table-service restaurants.

Spyglass Grill pancakes

We also ordered the Pineapple-Banana Pancakes – Pancakes filled with Pineapple and Bananas topped with Streusel. This came with a side of bacon, which was decent but also the worst part of the meal. The Pineapple-Banana Pancakes were a good option. They had good flavor thanks to the fruit inside. The pancakes were pretty dense, soaking in any syrup that was on top of them but they were still tasty. I did like the Streusel on top, although I’m not sure the dish needed any extra sweetness. This was a good dish, and a nice sweet option, but it didn’t measure up to the Yuca Hash. At just $7.99, this is another good original option that holds value.

Overall, Spyglass Grill is a secluded counter-service with an ambitious and well executed menu. On top of that, the restaurant is convenient to those using the Skyliner and offers some of the best values in Disney World. Spyglass Grill is one of WDW’s best counter-service restaurants and is truly a hidden gem. This was far and away the best counter-service breakfast I’ve had at Disney World.

Overall Rating – 9/10
